The person more at fault in the Turner case is the probation officer who recommended such a light sentence. The judge idiotically accepted their recommendation. Well, I think both are idiots. I didn't know the probation office was involved. But judge has the final say in the sentencing.

There are many ridiculous rulings, some are harmless and for giggles, but some are seriously fucked-up like Turner's case or those you linked.

What is HN for? I thought it was intellectual discourse and news with potential ramifications that affect the population at large. Sure, there are some lesser-known political news items that belong on HN. But this story is on the front page of ever news site in America.

The structure of the FBI is created by the Director. To remove the Director of the FBI, is to essentially force a restructure of all the top agents and top management of the FBI. Those top agents run investigations. If that's not an efficient way to stall an investigation, I don't know what is.

The Director has to run the confirmation gauntlet of the Senate. A Trumpian yes-man will not survive that ordeal.

You don't need a yes man in charge to force a restructure, you just need someone new. An "interim" director who is in the position for a year+ forces a sufficient change to the structure.

News is now coming out that Rothstein threatened to resign when the White House was saying that Rothstein was the one who originally wanted to fire Comey. Rothstein wrote the letter, but Trump was the one who asked him to write it.

This is impeachment level shit.

Trump also complained that senate rules were unfair to him and congratulated Erdogan on seizing more power and is meeting with Duterte. He just wants to be a strongman and is not afraid to remove obstacles.

I think "probably off-topic" is different from strictly "off-topic". I do remember that from the guidelines, though also from the guidelines:

I think seeing historically uncommon/rare events unfold also falls under gratifying one's intellectual curiosity (though I admit this might be a stretch in this particular story). Additionally, there are multiple stories that pop up (once or twice per day, from my anecdotal experience) that are also stories that'd be covered on TV news.

I'll tell you what's wrong with that: people who are not willing to pay the social price of their opinions shouldn't voice their opinions in public spaces that - like Hacker News - foster considerate conversation. Places like r/the_donald have shown the kind of perverse groupthink that happens when members of the group feel they are exempted of the normal action/social-reaction feedback loop.

If someone has a deeply held belief and they are willing to stand by it, then they won't be worried about "karma" points, right?
