Yes. We have figures for it. In 2017-18, there were 1.21M flu tests over the course of 33 weeks. In 2020-21 there were 1.11M flu tests over 33 weeks. Results: Essentially a 0% positive test rate vs a peak of over 25%. The issue is an increasing infantilization world-wide where some group thinks it needs to "protect the others", assuming they are the single source of truth and that it's obvious they are. It's a well known bias which for some reason aligns with the current zeitgeist. As everything before, it shall too pass at some point.
There have always been rules like this. Turn off your lights when the air raid siren is running, for example. What you're noticing now is a significant portion of the population simply throwing away common sense because obeying common sense somehow infringes on their rights.

It seems a straightforward choice: 1) Go forward as a Carrier and delete ALL features with a hint of editing, promotion, or recommendation, i.e., a simple straight chronological feed of other members' posts/feed specifically selected by each user, and maybe a search function. 2) Go forward as a Publisher and select, edit, recommend, promote,…
I think option 2 is a non-starter. If you're going have newspaper-like liability, I don't think anyone can afford to do that.
That leaves option 1. I suppose such a thing could exist, but it would be very different from social media as it exists. It sounds like a mash-up of twitter (accounts, follows, retweets) and 4chan (minimal moderation). Which would be interesting.
But you're still talking about basically making anything resembling current social media sites illegal.
You're also probably making any niche forum illegal too, unless it's niche enough that the operator can reasonably subject every post to prepublication review to try to avoid liability.

I’m sorry but my profession is vaccine hesitancy and persuasion researcher and OP is just wrong. I have n=20,000 polls showing people get disinformation from Facebook that informs their decision to not get vaccinated and hours of focus group recordings also showing this.

Please tell us more about the increasing worldwide infantilization. How do you measure and track it? What trends in the measurement have you noticed over time that makes you says it's increasing? Also, can you say more about which groups think they are the single source of truth?
Can't respond to the first, but it's pretty clear that those groups that think they are the single source of truth would probably include any self-proclaimed "fact checkers", which seems to now also include Facebook itself -- and would normally also include the CDC (excepting the ironic title of this thread, of course!)

#308Hypothesis: The accompanying text in people's posts sharing the link got flagged, but Facebook's system doesn't differentiate between that and flagging the link itself. It just sees the link being repeatedly flagged and failing whatever fact-checking procedure they have.

There's a global pandemic killing thousands of people and there's a sizeable portion of the American population spreading misinformation that's causing a significant number of people to not get the vaccine, in turn endangering both themselves and others.
It seems obvious to me that there would be people researching how to either stop this misinformation being spread, or educate people enough to stop believing it. This isn't some conspiracy theory - this is just sane people doing sane things in response to a very real threat.
