Wayland being a requirement sounds like a sound choice in terms of maintenance and the issues of X itself. Applications don't need to update to GTK5.
What are these issues of X? Because everyone talks about the issues of X, but Gnome, KDE, Xfce and others run flawless on X, but these same desktops have problems when running on Wayland.

The lack of problems on X and the problems on Wayland are mostly an issue of maturity.

The server? - The vast majority of the server market runs Linux - including much of Azure. Likewise there's no presence of Windows in the handheld market (I'm not sure if this counts as a win for Linux, since Android is barely Linux).

They _have_ released special versions of VS Code's C++, C#, and Python tools that only work with Microsoft-sanctioned binaries. [1][2]
They also ripped out a .NET feature at the last minute because they wanted to keep it exclusive to Visual Studio. [3]

The obvious non-evil interpretation is that this policy is intended to stop scalpers who eg sell Mozilla Firefox on Windows Store.
