They exist so that when someone wants to put you up against the wall, all they have to do is craft the right SQL query. That's the product of dragnet surveillance. The chilling effect is the point.

How often does that happen to you? How often does that happen to anyone you know? In both cases my answer is never. In many comments posted here I think the only thing you fear is fear itself.

It doesn't sound like that was a major crime. I mean, arguably it should be, but given you live somewhere with jaywalking laws I don't sense that.

Hit and run is generally a serious crime everywhere. In this experience it wasn't treated seriously, which is exactly my point.

So like 30x the population (not thousands). The thing about Reddit is it really amplifies voices. 10-100 people can be on the same subreddit and comment or post something, and it looks like “a lot” of people. It’s also much easier to be a non-representative sample at 3% of the population than 50%. And, there’s a big sample bias for this sort of thing. I think someone is way more likely to post “I’m getting rid of X”…

Well, they're more aligned with Larry Ellison's than they are the CCP, even if they're probably not all that aligned.

Separately I don't particularly care who owns TikTok. I've never used it. But if someone is going to own Tiktok and people are going to voluntarily subject themselves to these algorithms and the owner’s intentions, I'd prefer it to be Americans (or another western country).

They're both senile old farts 20+ years too old for the office. Trying to say one or the other was/is more far gone misses the point.

One was much further gone and the people talking about Trump now were silent about it. Biden barely appeared for months at a time, and even then stage managed heavily, and it still went wrong, and Trump is constantly on camera often ad libbing. Not saying he's great at ad libbing, but they couldn't be more different in terms of communication performance.

My country defines "serious" as crimes where you'd expect an Adult who was guilty of this crime to get 3+ years detention, hit and run isn't even close unless it's on tape and you forgot to mention that you're a ghost and actually died but were questioned anyway.
