I find classic Stoicism interesting, but these modern social media and influencer versions of Stoicism feel like something else entirely. The heading and subheading of this article invoke ideas of indifference and warriors and prisoners. This appeals to frustrated people, more often men, who are struggling with emotional regulation and want a solution that feels like a tough response. Maybe there’s something useful i…

While I agree with your whole take, there is one point that triggered me.

What most¹ people don't get when they say "just learn to deal with your emotions" is that some of us "feel" emotions way more strongly than others. For me personally emotions are pain, far more stronger than actual physical pain is. Both unpleasant ones and pleasant ones. While I've learned to "deal" with it as I grew older, it's not a walk in a park, cost me solid chunk of my mental energy and that's what I need to do every fucking day.

Most people would say "but hey, that's what makes life worth living!". Not for me, I would rather prefer not to feel anything at all than to be subjected to a constant never-ending roller-coaster I can't get off² from. If walking past sick stray animal would maybe cause you³ a slight discomfort, for me would be excruciating feeling in my chest which I can either suppress (and live with the choice for the rest of my life) or drop whatever I was doing to try to help (and to subject myself to more pain in the process). There is no win for me here.

And yes, I've tried many-many things under the Sun, the truth is that I was just born this way. And I'm not alone like that. So telling to "just deal" with emotions is not helpful.

¹⁾ I'm not saying you don't, just bear with me for a moment.

²⁾ In both senses.

³⁾ Not you specifically.

Did you actually ever read something by Aurelius?

Have you? Please refute this. Do you know any history of his rule? He was the bloodiest most expansionist and slave oriented emperor of otherwise the most oppressive empires in all of history.

I read his "Meditations", and what I found there was mostly related to better ways of dealing with everyday hardships, and not a "justification of mass death and conquering of an empire". As to your claim about him being the "bloodiest most expansionist and slave oriented emperor", I think this is simply factually incorrect. Seems like you have a gripe with the Roman Empire in general, and you are missing the point of this thread.

My guy. Please read even a little bit of history. He very likely killed almost 1% of the population of the known world at the time.

Why do undesirable or desirable behaviours need a sex/gender label at all? Asshole behaviour isn't gender-specific. Maybe people should just focus on criticizing specific undesirable behaviours, and praising specific desirable behaviours.

The group of traits often described by "toxic masculinity" are overwhelmingly displayed only by males, so... it makes sense? If you aren't someone who displays that specific bundle of traits/behaviors, I would suggest being stoic about it and not taking the term personally.

> The group of traits often described by "toxic masculinity" are overwhelmingly displayed only by males, so... it makes sense?

Even supposing that were true, why does it make sense to invent and use a discriminatory label for a whole group? You just assert that without justification. Is that acceptable in any other context or for any other group? Do we speak of toxic blackness, or toxic femininity, or toxic Islam?

> Crime is also overwhelmingly associated with race. Race or poverty?

There is a correlation between crime and race. Also Race and poverty. The causal association has yet to be determined but the correlative association exists.

does poverty not cause the same level of crime in the master race?

The master race cannot be in poverty by definition. It is like asking can water not be wet?

Pop philosophy being turned into AI audio transcribed by a cool video game character (also being mostly AI generated) is clearly the crowning jewel of our civilization.

Where can I find this AI generated cool video game character spewing out pop philosophy? Sounds like fun!

Don't ask me how I found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma0clpGdQHI

Do you think that therapy will lead to a better outcome for those men than following stoic practices?

They're not following stoic practices, they're rebranding alpha-havingemotionsisforwomen-broness as stoicism, and yes therapy leads to better outcomes then this, fight club came out 26 years ago get with the program

"Do you really think going to therapy will lead to a better outcome for Tyler Durden than following regular exercise and community with his friends ?" this is what you sound like

Actual stoicism is kind of darkly funny. Here's a word-for-word (translated, of course) excerpt from Epictetus: "It's possible to understand what nature wants from situations where we're no different from other people. For example, when a slave breaks someone else's cup we're instantly ready to say 'These things happen.' So when it's a cup of yours that gets broken, appreciate that you have the same attitude as when…

This reminds me of this Buddhist story about the cup that is already broken. I think I like this a bit better, as it's not that the cup doesn't matter, but rather enjoying it for what it is while you have it. A monk had a beautiful, delicate tea cup. His student asked him about the cup. And much to the student's surprise he replied that the cup is already broken. “What do you mean?” – asked the student. The monk said…

Great story, but Buddhism is not about cherishing the beautiful moments of life. It is about perceiving the universe as it is. It is about accepting that everything unfolds as it does and having the ability to see things as temporary forms of matter. In this story, the monk sees the cup as clay, a cup, and shards at the same time. So when the cup is broken, it means nothing to him.
