Clarified in another reply, I was referring to GOG Galaxy, the launcher that you would use to keep those games up to date, sync saves across systems etc.

That’s my experience too. I run all Windows here and I stay on the happy path. I did turn off a few options in control panel to reduce some UI clutter, but nothing has been hacked away. I run Pro and use an outlook.com login to sync settings. I don’t see any of these ads or pop ups. This is mostly fud here.
The setting up your device prompts where you have to skip their attempts to upsell an office 365 subscription, change the default browser, link your phone, etc, which run before you can login after every biannual feature update.
That bing/store search results appear before more relevant installed programs or files when searching the start menu. I like having them sometimes, just not the way they're ranked, and the lag which causes me to select them when it gets inserted before what I was just about to click.

What do they do with just a phone...? Are students just using ipads these days? I guess I'm getting (am?) old. Without a general purpose computing device in the home, my life would have been radically different.
It ultimately depends on what the student is doing I think. If you are just writing papers, doing research, taking notes. Just use an iPad. Maybe get a keyboard to attache to it. This isn't new, Instagram itself did the same over a decade ago. It was phone-only until shortly after Facebook bought it.
But I agree with your other point, PCs (mostly laptops if you want to make that distinction) are for business use, while phones and iPads (because other tablets suck) are general purpose devices. And to take it from there: browsers are increasingly irrelevant, and videos won over text.
But I don't think laptops are going anywhere for business use, as merging them with tablets never really took off.

Ugh, this is a known issue in WSL if you try to use git on the host operating system (/mnt/c/Users/path/to/repo)... there are cross-system file system virtualization issues in WSL2 when reading from the Windows hosts. Workaround is to have your git repos within WSL itself (~/my-git-repo) to have native performance.

I hadn't heard about this one when I was researching options. I'll give it a go next time I feel inclined to play with Linux, it sounds like it supports most of the features I'd like.
