Microsoft don't really want consumers to use Windows on the home desktop anymore. If your home desktop is not Windows, or you don't even have a home desktop, you'll have to keep data in cloud services. Guess what MS sells now...?

If for any reason you're stuck with Windows at home, congratulations - you're officially a whale to milk. This attitude is not entirely new (there were glimpses, back in the early 2000/XP days, before the need to get rid of 2000 resulted in XP getting a cleanup), but now it fits perfectly with MS business model.

Unfortunately Linux is still far from ready. It's awesome that it can run Steam games quite seamlessly, and it can even run non-Steam games if you fiddle around a bit and find the magic incantations. But - I tried using it for things like GoG, and quickly found out that there is actually no way of running GOG on Linux, even with Proton/Wine, unless maybe if I go and install a bunch of other 3rd parties. Not to mentio…

Heroic Launcher does a great job of getting GoG products working on Linux with minimal effort.

It ultimately depends on what the student is doing I think. If you are just writing papers, doing research, taking notes. Just use an iPad. Maybe get a keyboard to attache to it.

Most people that I know do the vast majority of their computing tasks on their phones. I think it's very telling that apps like Threads launched first as an app and the website came later.

Gaming is basically the exception for most people that I know.

You might be able to argue that some of these tasks are better on a PC, but is it worth it if you already have a tablet or you just want fewer devices.

And again to be clear, I am talking about a personal computing device vs a work supplied computer.

Yeah I don't understand the love for WSL. Ugh, this is a known issue in WSL if you try to use git on the host operating system (/mnt/c/Users/path/to/repo)... there are cross-system file system virtualization issues in WSL2 when reading from the Windows hosts.

Workaround is to have your git repos within WSL itself (~/my-git-repo) to have native performance.

It used to be that way, but now Linux has really good application compatibility. You can run the majority of apps using wine/proton, and ironically old hardware tends to be better supported in Linux.

I've heard that, but I'm skeptical. I'm assuming "most apps" don't include MS Office. How much wrestling is involved? Can you just run a Windows installer and have it work? Do updates break things?

I’ve tried running Docker for development environments on macOS but gave up because writing and reading files from macOS host was 2 orders of magnitude slower than native performance.
