I think it's great that they're taking the big risks needed to move the industry forward, and not letting the lawyers run the company. But some of the risks they're taking are just completely stupid and unnecessary, such as calling their assisted cruise control "Autopilot." That's like waving the proverbial cape at the proverbial bull.

Pilot here. Airplanes have autopilot. While on autopilot you are still expected to be monitoring the flight and take control at a moments notice. Autopilot does not allow the pilot to take a nap or go in the back and party with the flight attendants. Autopilot is the correct term. I'm tired of always having to cater to the lowest common denominator.

The technology to realize an autopilot in a car and in a plane is very different though, they might provide similar functionality to the pilot/driver but in a car it's a much more complex and much less reliable system, involving machine learning etc.. On this layer the systems are not really comparable.

I think what people are missing here is an understanding of how these systems are tested and deployed at scale. While I have no involvement with Tesla I do have first-hand knowledge of similar programs at tier 1 automotive suppliers. The suppliers provide (or are looking to provide) an electronics suite to car manufacturers. The car manufacturers want the system to be safe lest they be sued out of existence. One part…

Thinking Google was screaming for more opportunities to acquire and test data. Had to be satisfied with a few cars and a small area shared with other companies. Tesla is making its own jackpot here.

The big difference is that Google's car are actually self-driving themselves. Tesla's cars will collect a lot of data, but about human driving. The actual automated driving software will have to be tested separately.

Some of what they describe sounds like it's going to take some real adjustment before it stops being annoying and starts being useful, namely the assumption of what you want when you get in and out. > If you don’t say anything, the car will look at your calendar and take you there as the assumed destination or just home if nothing is on the calendar. Oh boy. If you get in your car, it will just assume it should start…

These seem like straw-man criticisms. > Oh boy. If you get in your car, it will just assume it should start driving somewhere more or less immediately? What if you want to sit for a few minutes? You think they won't have a "Go" button on the 17" touchscreen? > Again, what if I'm unpacking things for the car, or don't want the car to go anywhere? I don't want to have to pull out my phone and tap on something to stop i…

I own one, and I can control it with both my voice and my phone.

Have you ever seen one?

> Teslas with new hardware will temporarily lack certain features currently available on Teslas with first-generation Autopilot hardware, including some standard safety features such as automatic emergency breaking, collision warning, lane holding and active cruise control. Not sure what to make of this. New buyers are getting less than current owners now, but expected to get much more later? I can't think of a prece…

Its not marketing decision, MobilEye dropped them, this is Teslas emergency plan.

Not sure why this is downvoted, Tesla won't have the MobileEye system for new models and they want to roll out their own machine vision system, which is even more important now due to the new suite of cameras. That will take some time.

This is getting more interesting. All these new data put Tesla way ahead of Google. On the other hand Google has better AI technologies.

No, it can run itself in the background and check how it's acting differently on exceptional cases comparing to a human driver. Like a dry run.

That's a really fucking shitty thing to do, and is gonna cause some pretty big waves IMO if they follow through with it. The issues with not being able to modify your own stuff is already really shitty, but its not something that the average Joe really can understand easily, and even less care about it. But not being able to USE your car for some things? That just screams easy headlines and it's a reason I might not…

> But not being able to USE your car for some things? That just screams easy headlines and it's a reason I might not get a Tesla in the future. Its your car. It's Tesla software. You don't own it, just like you don't own any of the other commercial software you use. I can't really find fault in it; they deserve the lion's share of the revenue (not Uber, Lyft, or you) if you put the vehicle into their shared rideshari…

> I can't really find fault in it; they deserve the lion's share of the revenue

Why? I paid them for the car. I should able to use the car however I want.

You know that all car curently always has some form of software in its driving/braking system right? What's next? A blender has some kind of timer software in it so you can't use it in commercial unless you are on blender network? A TV has software for programmable channel in it, so you can't use it in your bar unless the TV vendor allow it? Software is their implementation detail, I buy the resulting whole product.

And just like existing drive by wire vehicles, I don't own that software either. Tesla is not prohibiting ridesharing. They are requiring the vehicle be in their ridesharing pool if you use their autonomous driving software. Again, you own the car, not the software. Don't like the license, don't buy the car. Others will.

> Again, you own the car

and I should be able to use it as I see fit.
