Protons email encryption is mostly snakeoil and marketing. Their guarantees of strict encryption at rest is really only relevant to a certain class of people with a very specific threat model. FUD much? Snakeoil would be false claims. There are plenty of problems with Proton but AFAIK not genuinely encrypting customer data is not one of them. If you do have examples please do share.

Marketing that might not address the average user who still get in touch with people relying on surveillance capitalism like GMail address sure but bundling both as one is dishonest IMHO.

With proton, at least, you can just use your own domain and if they ever get bad, you just point the MX record to some other service, or self host, and pretty much have it taken care of.

Valid points. For me the no search is feature (due to everything being encrypted), not a bug. But this is an individual decision. I have a similar list after 2 years of using (and managing) my personal M365 subscription (Onedrive on macOS sucks, search on iOS is very slow, spotlight integration doesn't work etc.). I just wonder what you use now as an alternative, because it seems the perfect solution will not exist.…

E2EE is definitely nice, however if you communicate with many people using other email providers your emails still end up there unencrypted

Which was actually for me a pro argument of picking Proton. The EU has a growing need to monitor and spy on its citizens (see chat control madness). Switzerland is not perfect regarding online privacy, but even if Proton was hosted somewhere else, remember that they do encrypt (mostly) everything.

Another comment pointed out that proton is moving from Switzerland to two EU countries because Swiss law is getting worse.

I think privacy services and software will soon run out of safe havens to operate from.

Those are not "facts", that's a caricature.

In Germany, Beleidigung has been a criminal offense for decades. Courts (not "authorities") can compel platforms to identify users after due process. No one is being "persecuted", no one is going to a "gulag", and weight is irrelevant.

If you want to argue that criminal defamation laws are bad, do that. But stop dressing an old legal reality up as dystopia.
