It is possible because South Korea does not have control in other states. Even if chaebol is powerful they still heavily depend on export profits. They can't help themselves if EU/USA consumers and governments take this scandal seriously.

Bankrupting a whole, large national economy is a bit trickier than boycotting a company.

I mean, someone like Trump is probably capable of doing it from the inside, but Korea's educational standards are too high to elect him...

I think we tend to forget that many things can be implemented without "smart" features / wifi access / apps. Ie my 20 year old oven has a "start time" feature. It just uses the built in clock.

I don't think I know of any (big) appliance, e.g. dish washer, drier, washing machine with that option but to be honest I didn't dig deep, is it possible?

Timers have been on appliances since Desi first yelled at Lucy. Yes, it's possible.

I'm not advocating for touchless smart devices, I'm advocating for optional interface we can use to operate our appliances without having to rely on the manufacturers app and/or server.

But that's the problem: as soon as you move control inwards to the software, and add more accessibility (smart watch, voice control, whatever), you have a sophisticated, hidden control layer.

How do you know that your dryer won't lock onto an open wifi? How do you know that your smart TV won't download malware? You don't.

Contrarily, if you accept that you only hear the dryer "DONE!" bell if you are within 20' or so, you can be certain that the dryer is yours and yours alone.

You can't change the laws of physics. If it isn't connected to the network, it can't communicate.

Wifi exists now lol, and if there are open wifi networks in the vicinity, it can use it.
