We're going to see more of this in the coming years: A mature technology being bolted onto another mature technology. So we should start imagining all the things being built today which can be bolted onto each other: -Speech synthesis/voice assistants -Walking robots -Deepfakes -ChatGPT/Bard -The now-many Copilots -Language recognition/transcription/translation AI bots are going to be a huge part of the workplace soo…

Walking robots is the one thing on that list which is unlikely to be solved by LLMs.

I'm a little skeptical at GPT-4 doing math. How often will it hallucinate answers? They only gave very few calculus examples. Has anyone tried it? Is it really there yet math-wise?

This is about GPT-4 calling Wolfram Alpha to do the math. Wolfram Alpha is not a language model.

I don’t remember Google being this interesting. Ever. It was a good service and very useful, but nothing like this. It was not astonishing. The tech was mildly interesting, but most of all very useful.

Did you use Dogpile, Ask Jeeves or Yahoo search and try to get useful information out of them? Webrings were still a thing where a website about birds or something would have a list of other sites that had similar indie - and that was how you browsed the web as the search engines weren't good. Until Google.

OK, but dogpile was pretty damn cool. I just recall it being a little slow.

YouTube is a glut of audio-visual training data they have the copyright to, I wouldn't be surprised if they started training something to replace fixed length videos entirely. The content creator will become obsolete, which is tragic.

OpenAI has demonstrated that copyright no longer matters given its commercialization of the content of the Internet without attribution or royalties.

As much as I hope that's the case, it's also likely that it only seems that way because legal processes are slow especially when it comes to issues with almost no precident that fundementally challenge the assumptions of US law

I bet the Zapier integration is going to be an alignment/security dumpster-fire. Now, when a bot gets prompt-hijacked into a malicious personality, it can make API calls to other systems! Great news. Also, plug-in APIs will presumably be able to prompt-hijack the GPT instance that is calling them. This whole thing is an alignment/security nightmare.

Actually this seems plausible to me without having to use those general purpose algorithms that cause a 1000000000x slowdown.

For example, you can obscure the input to each matrix multiplication by shifting the input and outputs by a predetermined (user specific) constant. Maybe there are similar tricks for cross attention, although that might be a bit optimistic. Certainly you can do some amount of obfuscation by permuting the inputs, but I doubt that would achieve much.

The analogy is even more apt when you think that most of the things Apple and Microsoft became big with in the 90's - like mouses and GUIs - were invented as Xerox but they failed to monetize, just like the basis for GTP came from Google and they failed to monetize (externally). Depends on the height of the S-curve — that is, how long the exponential uptrend continues. If not long, then they will converge quickly. But if it continues for a long time, then always being a few years behind then might as well give up. Still, following a different path might lead to a bigger step change and catch up.

I would worry more for Apple than for Google.

Several of my questions are not essential to know so they are omitted. It uses generative AI to understand and form assessment of the query. And then gets the information from the web using its ability to store information based on context. Then uses generative AI to output responses.

It does not have logic. Or computational ability.
