I don't trust google to 'complete' the entire product experience. Samsung is among the worst, Apple is the best and they are not perfect.

A 'foldable screen' implies a lot of changes in usability and behaviour, most of these companies don't bother with the detail and therefore less than desired experiences.

At least up to Pixel 4 even the alarm clock, merging calls, a bunch of small things felt very off. Apps were not consistent.

That said, screen real estate is nice, if that's your thing and you are not price sensitive, it might work.

Personally, I want a small, thin form factor with only a few apps max and I want it to be robust, always work, with extremely long battery life and for Google/Apple to not hoard all of my personal data.

Seriously considering it since GrapheneOs will be ... it's 1.9k$ ... nah, not unless google supports this thing for 10+ years.

Ironically, Google is one of the best hardware suppliers for de-Googled phones. The old Pixels are notoriously well-supported by alternative ROMs, and run the most well-hardened Android distributions on the planet. If you want a CalyxOS or GrapheneOS device, Google is practically your only option.

I'm never going back. I only type and respond to things unfolded, I have big hands and the split keyboard + bigger buttons are great. I have a note 10+ and the stylus is a game changer, I would like a wider screen for taking notes but can't justify the cost. Also my note is nearly 4 years old and showing no sign of slowing down or battery issues.

I don't feel it's absurd. For every product in the market there is a luxury version for people who's insensitive to price (hello LVHM!)... except for phones. If you have all the money in the world the most expensive / exclusive phone you can get is an iPhone, Samsung Fold, or this Pixel Fold.

Does the iphone doubles in size and lets you carry around a minitablet? If not it's a pointless comparison. A 1000$ iphone is closer to a 300$ pixel 6 than the pixel fold.

Had a Samsung zflip 4 where the screen stopped working after 1 month and their customer service gave me the run around and tried to claim I damaged it - thank god I took pictures documenting the whole process. I probably wasted a work week’s worth of time on emails and phone calls related to this nonsense.

Will never consider Samsung again. They do this weird 3rd party support partnership thing with asurion where they’ll tell you to go to asurion to get the phone fixed but then refuse to honor the diagnostics performed by asurion because they’re a 3rd party, which makes for an awful customer experience. For a $1000 phone you would expect much better support.

All this to say I don’t have confidence in the foldable screen tech, and I have even less confidence with any company that has 3rd party support arrangements with asurion (which google does too)
