There are so many interesting tidbits tucked away in the code, things the devs had to consider that have never crossed my mind whilst playing. For instance, the idclev cheat handling in st_stuff.c has to check if the game is shareware and restrict level changes beyond a certain range.

I never quite grasped how that shareware check worked. Always thought the WAD file was what you bought, not the engine/executable itself?

From doomstat.h line 60: // Game Mode - identify IWAD as shareware, retail etc. extern GameMode_t gamemode;

I haven't done a deep dive on the code, but it looks like gamemode is set based on something in the WAD file.

I also recommend the NoClip documentary on Id Software and on the back of that, virtually any interview with John Romeo -- the guy is awesome and so willing to share his thoughts, ideas, history, anything...

John Romero for anyone looking him up.

AH yeah, sorry about that. And thanks for the correction.

I always dislike it when the Amiga 1200 is mentioned as a forerunner to modern computing and the wonderful, albeit buggy, Atari 1040ST, released in 1985 , is totally forgotten about Using the Motorola 680000 with 32 bit internal/16 bit external buses and color bit-mapped graphics, my ST, hardware wise, totally blew away all other PCs from a technical POV and it just annoys me when the Amiga gets all this love the and…

It's certainly not forgotten in the music world. It's still a fantastic midi sequencer. I've definitely used mine within the last fortnight.

Wow...that's amazingly interesting!

I am a musician as well and I do remember its MIDI-specs were top-of-the-line. I never really got the chance to use it in that way but thinking about that almost makes me want to pick one up and give it a go...

Can you tell me more about your setup?
