#142I have same old new year resolutions but past few years, this is what I have been doing. For the year that passed, I go over my phone photo album, recall key events in life of family members, friends I met, books I read, major purchases, basic fitness parameters (mostly from Apple Watch, weight etc), financial health, progress made in hobbies. For Christmas this year, I gave my wife a booklet of my sketches (I am not very good at drawing). Each doodle was a memory we had together in 2022. Our whole family had a blast looking through my crappy doodles and laughing at ourselves!
I think going back through your phone photos and synthesizing your memories into writing/art is an excellent way to bookend the year.

What I actually find is that teams that don't have jira or pr reviews have something else. They have the most senior people engaged and watching what is going on. Instead of being asleep at the wheel and requiring you to follow the process.
That is exactly my experience too. Very poignantly put. At my org they went away to their high towers and decreed that scrum is what we need to solve all our issues. Do you think they engaged with us about challenges, performance etc prior to this? Nope. And any complaints are ignored and all efforts are going towards being Scrum oops sorry I mean agile. #144I have, incredibly, held firm to a resolution I made many years ago: never make another new year's resolution. It's better to have a CI approach IMO. Continuous Improvement. There's nothing special about January 1. If you want to do something start now.
That was my resolution until this year. It's a great one to have. I still started early, but it was influenced by the time of year.
Still waiting for tomorrow to arrive.

#145Play more video games. I feel like this year I haven't had a chance to get lost in a great video game's narrative. Spent far too much time trying to be productive and not just taking a break to relax. Btw if anyone has any suggestions for games to play. Please share.
Hades is a phenomenal game if you like an action rogue-like. Amazing story and music with extremely high polish.

How do you plan to procrastinate less?
Understand why i avoid some specific tasks, try to approach them differently and reduce them to the bare minimum if nothing can be done.

A fun way to learn new languages is a chrome extension for having dual subtitles on Netflix movies. I find it’s a good way to pick up slang and idioms of the target language.

#149Just left the company I worked at for way too long to be comfortable to share. My plan for this year is to enrich my stack, dig wider, learn more, restore from the burnout. Then I’ll try to make something that I would find meaningful, useful, whatever ticks my boxes. It will likely fail commercially, but “backed experience reduces anxiety” is my main goal. Also I have to find a way to socialize with similar people, not sure where to start though.
Are you going to learn a new programming language? Familiarize yourself with a concept? Spend time with family?
Was going to say that it’s worth like just a couple of months, but then realized that a job makes free time scarce. Another argument for taking a great sabbatical, I guess.

Which service did you choose? I'm using migadu but always interested in others choices
I went with Fastmail for the email. I have seen a lot of praise on HN for Fastmail and that influenced my decision. I went with the standard plan for a year on a domain I have for 10 years. I'm incredibly happy with the switch already as well as the savings over Google's ever increasing price for gsuite.
I went through this about six years ago. Migrated from Gmail to Fastmail.
Still happy with my decision.
