So maybe if this pans out, a lot of projects will now be able to use RedHat EL proper.

#142If you successfully fill that void, maybe you too can be acquired by IBM/RH in a few years as they repeat the cycle.
Re: CentOS Project shifts focus to CentOS Stream
#143Sounds like CentOS Stream will bring the pain to users and admins. Going forward, the answer to every stability question will be "maybe you should go buy Redhat". I had a bad feeling about the CentOS project when Redhat became involved as more than an upstream RPM source. I hope CentOS isn't turned into another Fedora. I'm sure many of you will be happy to tell me that I'm wrong. Please do.

#144Re: CentOS Project shifts focus to CentOS Stream
#145So Centos 8 will be a beta test stream for features and fixes, but for CVEs it will lag behind RH. That's an interesting twist.
Re: CentOS Project shifts focus to CentOS Stream
#146This is awful. It's proof of the downsides to the IBM acquisition, which I think we all knew was coming. Imagine if you were running a business, and deployed CentOS 8 based on the 10 year lifespan promise. You're totally screwed now, and Red Hat knows it. Why on earth didn't they make this switch starting with CentOS 9???? Let's not sugar coat this. They've betrayed their users. I personally run a CentOS 7 server (as…
Wonder if the web hosting industry will rebel and build another RHEL clone project that just gets the 10-year supported patches. Red Hat still has to release the patches, right? A really big chunk of the world's traditionally shared hosted websites run on CentOS, because most commercial control panel packages and hosting automation systems are built for that. A rebadged CentOS is also AWS's default distro. Wonder of…
Re: CentOS Project shifts focus to CentOS Stream
#147Putting aside what Red Hat wants, it's still open source. Why couldn't a new project replace centOS as the free alternative to RHEL?

#148Re: CentOS Project shifts focus to CentOS Stream
#149People used to say that it’s possible to make money with OSS because Red Hat does it. This invalidates that already dated argument.

#150Interesting development. What's the current difference between RHEL and Oracle Linux? Our institution used to be an RHEL shop, but switched to OL -- I just assumed that RHEL was historical at this point. [edit -- thanks for the answers. I realize now that my memory failed me... I mis-remembered that Oracle bought RedHat, not IBM.]
It's mostly for Oracle products and has the oracle yum repositories preconfigured iirc. So their database products can be installed out of the box.
But RHEL is considered the industry standard when it comes to corporate Linux distributions.
