The protest was about the prospect of losing those rights, starting with being subject to mainland laws through extradition. The protest has then expanded to being against the CCP undermining ”one country, two systems” in general, an example of which would be Gui Minhai who’s serving time for a book he published in Hong Kong. So, I would say the analogy is still apt. The CCP control is being implemented which is what…

> The CCP control is being implemented which is what the protesters are against. Really ? How exactly is it being implemented? EDIT: Down-voters, can you answer the question? Or are you just going to try to bury it with down-votes?

If you live in Hong Kong, you can definitely feel that over the years, CCP have been increasingly ramp up their influence on HK matters.

CCP officials start to comment on internal HK matters, lobbying for government policy to pass in the legislative branch.

Same thing the original Americans did when protesting the massively better trained and armed British Army. Keep their wits about them and keep fighting. If anything the war in Afghanistan has proven that technology is no match for resilience and grit.

Same thing the original Americans did when protesting the massively better trained and armed British Army. Get saved by the French? ducks

Or rely on wars on other continents to drag their opponent's attention away?

> Imagine if the US suddenly had a dictator This is why we have the second amendment. And the constitution as the thing to which office-holders swear allegiance to rather than to "the party" or "the president".

If HK'ers had a similar right to carry guns, do you honestly believe that they would be any better off right now?

With or without the gun culture of the US?

Non-American here, i never really understood your second amendment or how you cling to it in the modern age. What are a couple of rednecks with assault rifles (which arguably they shouldn't be able to purchase anyway) going to do against semi-autonomy kill droids being flown from a bunker in the desert?

Afghanistan is a fool's mission, not a war.

If the US had the desire and stomach to wage total war against the people of Afghanistan (gladly we do not), there would not be a lingering quagmire.

It’s uncertain what the eventual outcome would be, but one thing is for sure, it would increase the threshold before the tanks rolled in.

If they were armed this would have been over a long time ago. China would have gone in with tanks and the army, or even air strikes. Once you take up arms against the government that’s not a protest, that’s a civil war.

Tanks, the army and air strikes have all been used against a well armed populace in the middle east for quite a while now to little lasting success.

I respect the bravery of the protesters but in certain cases the violence is getting out of hand. An example from today: https://twitter.com/FxLowe/status/1179019436923056128

You can't mob the guys with guns. Not in HK, not in the West, not anywhere.

There's a complete breakdown of trust on both sides so likely a long time before this defuses.

I see it the opposite way, the tanks become a last resort. They have to use hard power rather than alternatives.

You’d think that an armed protest group would mean that the government reacts with _less_ force? Rather than simply deploying an appropriate amount of force to stop them? Because the simple fact is that the government will win in the game of “who has more guns and power”, just as it would in the USA, and there is no way a government would set a precedent that all you need to make it capitulate is wave a gun around. I…

Government would almost certainly lose against the armed population of US. You may be able to convince anti riot forces to use some kind of force against the protesters as long as it doesn't end up in huge bloodbath. You will not convince the army to shot their own citizens in their own towns though.

Sure, the kid was swinging at the officer, and I suppose that warrants the officer acting in self-defense. But another question is, what are the protesters supposed to do? The government has all the power, and can simply snuff out any resistence. If you just stand in the streets, they really don't care, they are going to take your freedom. Imagine if the US suddenly had a dictator that just decided they were going to…

I’m from the mainland and totally with HK’s cause. But I do think the violence is at least unnecessary if not detrimental to the movement. If tanks roll in, there’s no point using violence as they’ll be crushed. If they don’t, it seems to me there’s enough space for peaceful protests, which can be even more effectual in many ways. And the people of Hong Kong have shown an incredible amount of creativity in non-violen…

There are many impromptu homemade devices that can be used to deter tanks

Great Britain gave HK back to China. They can do with it as they please - unfortunately I don't see how the protesters can come out on the right side of this without a revolution. Thought experiment: if say Rhode Island had a Muslim majority and they voted themselves Sharia law in violation of federal articles, how cavalier would the federal government / the rest of the populous be in tolerating this?

"They can do with it as they please"... what? The tyrannical CCP has some sort of fundamental ownership right over the lives the people of HK? Your statement about sharia law in Rhode Island not only confirms that you don't care about the will of the people in the democratic sense (which, in your thought experiment, are mostly muslims, and you imply actually do want religiously based laws), but also reverses the reasoning of constitutional rules (which are there by the will of the people, to specifically to bar restrictions on free exercise of religion, with the express purpose of protecting the minority of Rhode Islanders who would be oppressed by Islamic law that was enacted by the will of the majority). That you think this example supports the former is gobsmacking to me.

Sadly, right now a US presidential candidate, Beto O’Rourke, is promising to violently remove firearms from law abiding US Citizens.
