The Observer has an article about this: http://observer.com/2017/06/sexism-science-facebook-mansplai... The video of the event is here: http://www.worldsciencefestival.com/programs/big-universe-bi... edit: Youtube version, at the 1:02 mark where people apparently were getting irritated: https://youtu.be/Er7qPv8jsZo?t=1h1m55s
1:05:39 Nerds do this a lot. It's annoying AF. I've had conversations about topics like zopfli or 'HTTPS in the 90s' where I was sure I was right (and I was) but the other person was so confident and loud I genuinely wondered if I was missing something.

#132Can someone please pass that note to Joe Scarborough also? He was interviewed by Colbert, and not once was this raised. Seriously, watch Morning Joe and he just will not let Mika Brzezinski speak, and you can see her suppressing her frustration. Scarborough doesn't even appear to know he's doing it, and Brzezinski seems to be powerless to stop him.
It can't bother her too much. They just announced their engagement. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/05/04/business/media/morning...

Of course I don't. Still it's sad to see that you are OK with sexist behaviour.
I'm not ok with sexist behavior, which is why I think "mansplaining" is such a useful term.

There were four men on the stage who weren't talked over.
I've been talked over by literally everybody, including my dogs and cats

Sorry, but if you are OK with the term "mansplaining" then you are OK with sexist behaviour.
Having a term for a particular pattern of sexist behavior which is observed to be common is not the same as being okay with sexist behavior.

I watched a bunch of the video. The guy is a poor moderator. Using this term creates a charged bias on the reader, who almost certainly hasn't seen the video: It labels the moderator's behaviour as purposefully sexist and paints a clear picture of something that is actually really, really hard to read.
On top of this, what if you're wrong? What if this is a genuine mistake (which it honestly appears to be -- watch his reaction to the audience member saying 'let her speak')? Put yourself in his shoes: You make a mistake that has nothing to do with gender and you're now painted by hordes of headline-readers as the ambassador to all things sexism. Are you okay with this?
There's actual, serious problems of sexism and gender bias in STEM. Cherry-picking situations where socially awkward people were disrespectful to someone else who happens to be a woman isn't just pointless, it's actively harmful to feminist causes.

#137> You may be amazed to hear it, but during this panel session I genuinely did not feel affronted or discriminated by the moderator’s behavior. It seemed more amusing to see him try posing a question in a way that at the same time tried answering it. It’s true that this made the question a bit of a moving target for me (and therefore harder to address coherently), but I don’t a-priori assume that the incident was root…

Could you possibly copy the comment here? I tried to find it in Facebook's "awesome" comment paging system, but I don't know how far through the 9000 comments I have to scroll back. (I assume the URL you posted is supposed to jump me to it, but it doesn't work for non-facebook users like me.) The comment in full: Veronika Hubeny: I applaud your heroism in standing up for what you believe in! I know well the shaky feeling and subsequent exhilarated and heartwarmed contentment in the knowledge of having done the right thing, and I think that doing so has become more crucial than ever. Your behavior was inspiring and I’m glad that many of those inspired shared their gratitude with you. I guess that, being th…
This just goes to prove my stance whenever the whole women in STEM fields debate is brought up. You have two kinds of women, those who are out there doing science, building things and being badasses (The likes of Veronika and Julia Evans, ones I consider as role-models) and then you have women that have questionable technical skills who keep whining about sexism and lack of women in tech. Veronica wasn't concerned with the perceived sexism and was interested in physics, Marilee, a specimen of the second category, gave herself a pat on the shoulder for standing up to Veronica.
Re: “Let her speak please”
#139Edit: I watched the video. The moderator goes on and on and the "let her speak please" sounds very polite. This is a painfully frustrating reminder that women get talked over by men. It's one thing to have one panelist talk over another, but to have the moderator, who is explicitly in charge of facilitating a panel discussion, be the one to drown out a panelist is just unacceptable. Yes, "not all men" do this, but th…
If you watch the rest of the video you will find the moderator imposes himself and cuts off the panellists and talks over them multiple times, seemingly regardless of gender. This makes me strongly inclined to believe that this incident had nothing to do with sexism, but rather with the annoyingly dominant and imposing personality of the moderator. Maybe you think otherwise. Why would you say this incident is a "pain…
EDIT: Found it at the bottom...
