I'm speculating but it seems like an easy outlet for that "being offensive for its own sake" mindset you see sometimes in kids and young adults. I think it's part of growing up... It just happens that the Internet allows people to focus and concentrate that negative energy.

I'm starting to feel that these focused, immature internet communities also allow people to never actually grow out of it.

It wasn't even removed by Reddit. It was removed by subreddit mods who essentially have full control of a sub. Anyone can create a sub and enforce their own curation or arbitrary rules which is not the same as censorship. How do you see who it was removed by?

Reddit admin staff don't touch any posts in subreddits unless it is something against the site rules like doxxing,personal info or child porn.

Some subs leave a flair or a moderator message on removed submission, if not you can modmail them and ask.

I don't find mind difference between the conduct of 3rd wave feminists and a lot of the misogyny and racism I see online.

Every time I see this accusation against 3rd wave feminism, I realize the poster has no idea what 3rd wave feminism is.

2nd wave is the one which frightened insecure men, and had some strong anti porn and anti sex messages from a few proponents. 3rd wave, in short, is why don't we all get along, sex is awesome, and if we help men with some of their problems with toxic masculinity, then everyone is better off.

Just like the great Digg v3 Migration to Reddit happened years ago... its happening again from Reddit to Voat.

I'm betting that a day/week/month from now, Reddit still lives on. Subreddits, which Digg did not have, would make Reddit resilient to such 'migrations'.

People always say that Reddit is fine, you just have to unsub from the defaults. That's nonsense. The defaults are representative of the userbase of the site, and their values seep into every crevice. Furthermore, Reddit has never actually been about "free speech". The vast, vast majority of people who browse Reddit don't do it because they can say whatever they want; they do it because it's an esay way to aggregate and consume light content. I mean, this should be obvious to anyone who uses Reddit with any frequency. The people who trot out the free speech defense — at least from what I routinely see on the site itself — are often exactly the ones who enjoy reading vile subs like /r/fatpeoplehate.

If Reddit can't survive this cleanup, then good fucking riddance.

Really? Places like Something Awful ban for hate speech, and that site has continued existing for a while just fine.

The fact is banning of the worst of the worst makes life better for most of the users, and they're grateful. I can't think of a single community that has suffered overall from banning racists and mysoginists.

What I've seen is those banned people end up going to form their own little secret clubs, and it's just a cesspool of seething hatred. Fine, stay in your corner, means we don't have to deal with it.

Business owners deserve that right, certainly. I don't have to patronize the businesses that won't cater to everyone; Internet forums would do well to remember the definition of forum, and realize that they outmode themselves when they stray from it.

Tell me; Would you support that same hotel owner disallowing the NAACP from renting a room? He disagrees with their economic views. Would you support him ignoring requests from GLAAD, because their color scheme doesn't fit with his drab hotel? Private enterprise refusing to serve those they disagree with should be treated no differently than any other form of bigotry.
