As a developer, how do I develop secondary sources of income? Apart from my job I'd like to start working on something else too, how do you go about it?

#2I started my secondary income by building a small tool to copy only changed files (search for "copy changed files" on google) and made it free and put it on a website and added a donate button.
I soon got my first donation, and one more, and one more and realized that I had made something that gave enough value to others so that they wanted to give something back.
This made me look for the next product to build, and it ended up being TSR Watermark Image - a windows software that lets you watermark images (doh)
This gave me a (nice) side income of around 1000$/Month until I attended MicroConf in Prauge where I learned enough to 5x that business.
Currently I am pouring the money from the watermarker into the latest product http://timeblock.com that will be the next step in my business adventure, hopefully becoming a SaaS app that can make a 5-6 figure MRR

I agree with that, I just passed it off as "must be in beta or something", I have no idea what it does or why anyone would need it.

It is in beta and is a method like agile/scrum just more human and more focused on Makers need than control from management. Sign up for the newsletter to get three emails explaining it in details.

I think it needs more of an explanation on the home page, not many people are going to sign up to an email subscription JUST to find out what the product actually is.

I agree!
The thing is that I still do personal sales and on boarding and often gets 2 new referrals every time I pitch it to one customer so I am not in a hurry yet.
When we are getting ready for a public launch it needs a serious brush up.

It sounds simple, almost akin to PG's essay on What Doesn't Seem Like Work http://paulgraham.com/work.html
But I don't mean it to be so deep.
There are a lot of things around you now / experiences you've had that (using 'you' in the 3rd person) that you probably underestimate others have.
Blogging about used to be the thing. But then blogs exploded with 'content' and little substance.
What do you like / appreciate, that others have complimented you on?
I have a little thing for clothing accessories. Made a website, had a try, and is now a little extra income.
Don't create a grand plan. Just do something simple, see if others like it, and build from there.
