I didn't know he had solicited murder (it's not mentioned in the short article linked) so I was wondering what made a glorified drug dealer middleman deserve life in prison. But the thing is: he wasn't even convicted for that!

He was convicted of the charge to which that allegation was formally attached.

Hmmh, you could be right and I could be wrong. NYT article didn't say life without parole so I wasn't sure where that came from. But other people are reporting it.

My understanding is that there is no parole in the federal penal system; parole wasn't an option available to the judge.

It sounds like it wasn't his second choice anyway.

And more importantly, the guy tried to have people killed.

This is not a good prompt for a "war on drugs is evil" rant. I sympathize with the position, but using somebody as an example of supposed injustice, when a big part of his punishment is because he hired hitmen (plural!), is not going to make your point look at all good.
