Military research is extremely important. The use of military tech in civilian applications is the reason for a lot of stuff we use daily, as I'm sure you know.
There's no reason that technological progress from the US government couldn't be driven by NASA rather than DARPA. I suspect many peace-loving people would prefer to see that.
Not enough peace-loving people to vote for a NASA-science-centric government vs the Military-Industrial government we already have.

#75Well, it is very impressive, but still a very long way from what a real animal can do. What if the obstacle is at the edge of a canyon? It will suicide :D . Those tests are very restricted, but even after they will think the robot is ready, there will be cases they have missed in which it will fail.
Robot suicide, what an interesting prospect. I can't think of any surer sign that and entity has achieved consciousness, than when it makes the decision to end its own "life".
Meh, programs suicide all the time when they access memory locations not in their space.
The contentious nature of consciousness is in the "makes the decision" part of your statement, suicide is pretty mundane as far as decisions go.

It's not the animal locomotion per se that's exciting. It's the balance control.

One unique advantage seems to be that it can jump over obstacles. Something that rotates/rolls (presumably) is more difficult to get over obstacles.
