You mean like what the US, UK and Australia did to Iraq. What punitive action did these countries face for their actions? Yes, really the whole thing makes perfect sense when viewed from an "Old Order" vs "New Order" perspective.

A lot of the same people (including in the US) who aren't happy with what Russia did in Ukraine at the time it occurred also opposed what the US did in Iraq at the time that occurred.

My point is that Russia is forced to face actual consequences for its actions, whereas the Americans, and the rest have been given a free pass for doing basically the same thing.

The details don't actually matter. The impression is that doing business in the US is risky for your personal safety. Look at Bitcoin start-ups. Look at Silent Circle who have moved to Switzerland. The uncertainty of the rule of law and perception of draconian punishment will hurt the US economy in the long-run.

If someone has reason to be scared of being next in line after an organization that has apparently committed massive fraud affecting a large number of people for decades, I'm quite fine with that someone staying out of the US. IMHO, Silent Circle and Bitcoin startups are really a separate issue.

They ended up moving the World Cup to winter, determining that it would simply be too hot.

Of course, almost every major soccer league in the world runs during the winter with a summer break, so moving the month-long World Cup to would have thrown a wrench into the scheduling of every league and match in the top leagues. It would be an absolute nightmare.

I have high hopes that the World Cup will be moved (it's been moved with as little as three years notice before), but if not it will be chaos.

Nobody gives a shit what the "people" think. r/worldnews isn't going to change foreign policy with outrage and opinions (Russian or US).

The more meaningful point to be taken from this event is that US government can and will use its influence over public and private institutions (banks, sporting organizations, other governments) to pressure Russia (and possibly other BRIC nations) into abandoning their economic and strategic interests.

This is dangerous because there is no chance in hell of Russia abandoning those interests over a soccer tournament (no matter how unfair/undeserved those interests seem to an average Redditor trolling /r/worldnews from their mom's basement in Illinois).

I feel that there are significant powers in Washington who sense that NATO and US's days of being able to violate international law on a whim and without repercussions are numbered and the only way to extend that immunity is by raising the Iron Curtain once more.

Well, the "end" is hard to assess. What has happened so far is a series of investigations begun and dropped over various sex-related crimes until the current set for "aggravated pimping" for which he was tried this past February with the verdict to be read in June.

Yep, its really sad. It also applies for events like the Olympics, where infrastructure improvements are mandatory, and costs far outweigh any profit they may receive.

The taxpayer cost of the Vancouver Winter Olympics distributed over the number of taxpayers in the workforce was around $8000/pp. Best 8000$ party I ever threw.
