#2My advice in these cases: keep the developers pacified; in parallel hire someone who knows what they are doing, give them the Linode info and have them give you the backup. Soon after, find a new set of developers that you can trust and fire the existing ones.
My major assumption is we are getting the full story. In my experience, there is almost always a lot more to these stories.

#3I worked for a guy who had a habit of refusing to pay people for work they did. All the other developers has logic bombs in the code.

This could also be some inexperienced non-technical person just being a nosey busy-body as well. Not sure why the devs dont just give him a db backup though. If they're a large site that could take a while but hey, the guy paying the bills asked for it. Maybe there's more to the story? I would total not comply if I was waiting on a paycheck or something like that.

My first thought was that this was a guy who hasn't paid up and wants to give the data and files to his teenage nephew because he's cheap/free.

Also I looked at the thread. One person advised him to change the root password and reboot the server if he couldn't log in.
One of the logic bombs was triggered on reboot. I knew it was happening when they rebooted the server, but I couldn't find the script that did it. I wound up moving the database and code to another server.

#9The last things I want when in the middle of development is the client poking around.
Code should be on Github/Bitbucket and you should have full access to it. Database schema should be there too. You want a database dump? Ask for one. If they don't provide, hire someone to reset access and fire them.
But don't poke around the server in the middle of their work because you're curious. That's a dick move.

Oh good, your developer isn't as much of a halfwit as you. He either set up a firewall restricting access to his IP or he changed the port sshd is on.
TALK to him. Ask him to do what you want. If he refuses, hire somebody who knows what they're doing to fix the mess.
