Gizmodo has some info. but I wanted to find a less trashy source; the register has a story [1]. In short, it's suspected that the Chinese government is behind the attack because there are some projects hosted on GitHub that it ideologically disagrees with. Taking your confusion at face value, what you should have done is to use a question mark ‘?’ instead of a plus sign ‘+’. Otherwise, the string which oneeyedpigeon posted also matches your regexp.

The PRC's DDoS of GitHub seems a little risky.[1] If GitHub is inventive (or desperate) enough, they could call on their users for aid.
