The market might correct itself, but are you really sure that gentrification is good for the community and people in general? This is basically what is happening. Not everyone can easily pack up and just move. People are social beings, they have commitments, children and probably a place where they have some sort of personal connection.

How can we get rid of the homeless people in SF? I don't think anyone likes them and they contribute not only nothing to society but actually a negative amount. They are an eyesore and a burden to the community.

Homeless people are also human beings, and worthy of care, compassion, and generosity because of that fact, no matter the cause of their homelessness.

I'm not sure how that is related to gentrification. And last time I checked, people are not homeless out of choice, but from socioeconomic reasons, mental health problems and just bad luck. I'd argue that rent control and housing stability can go a long way to mitigate those problems in the first place.

And you might be partially right, nobody likes homeless people. But for very different reasons. I don't like that society lets people fall, almost permanently, on the side line.

>All so some asshole (which is probably a company), can make more money. Great for the rich. Ummm... yeah, that's why I bought the place. That's why I took the risk on the investment. That's why I deal with all of the administration. That's why I keep it up to code. So... now I have to rent it for 25% market value? I'll find any way I can out of that situation, and no, it doesn't make me an asshole.

Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. Deciding that you need a fatter paycheck at the expense of a renter who can't afford your desire -- yes, desire, not need -- for more money... yeah, in my book that makes you an asshole. Any rent increase that isn't tied to an increase in costs (sure, maybe plus a few percent for profit) or a CPI/inflation increase is just greed, plain and simple. Put another way: landlords who are al…

Why don't you pay some of your neighbors' rent? You admit you could afford an increase, and you want people to sacrifice their disposable income for the benefit of others' housing, right?

Look at this from another perspective. Being a landlord is great. You sign a piece of paper making you the owner of a property. Then other people do actual work and pay you just for having your name on that piece of paper.

If we lived in a perfect (or even just a "better") society, this would be fine. But the problem is that we live in a society with different classes. If your parents owned a home or two, you probably will as well. If your parents didn't, you probably won't either.

In reality, "rent" is just another way to keep the rich rich and the poor poor. Rent Control is an attempt to mitigate the damage. Personally, I think it's a terrible band-aid that exists because we aren't willing to face the real issues at hand.

That was not stated in this notice.

When the girl across the bar holds eye contact with you for a couple of seconds and then looks down and away she wants you to come talk to her. Not everything is always stated in black and white.

If you manage to combine a gender flame war with a rent flame war, you will win high trolling honors.

If not for rent control, my studio apartment would be over $3,000 a month. Everyday I thank rent control.

And what about everyone else? That is an extremely selfish view. Rent control stifles new construction, and allows you to live in relative luxury at the expense of others. Let me ask you, if rent control is the solution to high rent, why not introduce legislation to cut all current rent rates in half?

> Rent control stifles new construction

Rent control in San Francisco only applies to buildings built before June 1979. Landlords of buildings built after that are free to increase rent as they wish. If anything, it should promote more construction.

What you're missing is that housing is not a normal good This logic taken to its conclusion brings us to some pretty disquieting places. Maybe SF should just build a lot more housing .

Build where? You know there's water all around it right?

If only there were some way for humans to survive on water!

Insane prices or market prices?

Those aren't mutually-exclusive terms.

What's a not-asshole to do when all the other not-assholes have created a situation where the market price and the insane price are the same thing?

UP, for crissakes.

This is already happening: the area just north of Bay Bridge looks like Berlin after the wall came down. In my opinion, it has positive feedback and will increase prices even further. Money attracts more money. See New York or Hong Kong- they've built up too. As the economy becomes global, the rise of super expensive cities is inevitable: London, New York, Hong Kong, San Francisco. Oregon has plenty of charming and cheap real estate for non-participants in the global economy.

1) Maybe they don't have plans to do anything with it today, but they don't want to get locked into renting to a tenant for decades. That's not irrational. 2) No, that's not just pushing the problem back a bit. That is wrong. There will always be owners who want do do something with their property somewhere down the road. If you allow them to rent it out in the meantime (without getting locked into a forever contract…

Owners may evict a tenant in an owner move in. There are a variety of regulations that you can get caught up in, designed to protect from abuse by commercial landlords, but practically speaking, if you own a single building and wish to evict rent controlled tenants live in one of the units, you'll be able to. Your objections continue to demonstrate an unfamiliarity with rent control in sf. @harryh: your complaint is…

Not once have I mentioned anything related to owner move in.
