I agree with you partially. But Apple has taken its own interests into consideration. Apple is not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts - They take a fat cut out of each sale.
Have you seen the Debian repositories or the Ubuntu Software center. They have a great selection of software, are easy to use, while at the same time not taking away your freedom or resorting to Orwellian tyranny.

#139Soon after I got my first computer in the late 90s, I figured out that free (gratis) / shareware proprietary software can’t be trusted and that I should be wary of sites such as Download.com. After a couple of years, I moved to GNU/Linux as my regular OS but I’d still use Windows in a work environment and after working in an Internet cafe, I became an expert in removing malware.
Since then, the situation has got much worse: you used to be reasonably safe downloading FOSS software but nowadays you can’t trust Windows binaries from Sourceforge. Even serious software producers such as Oracle have been bundling Ask.com crapware with Java updates. I feel sorry for new Windows users who want to get more functionality out of their PC.
I thought the battle of the malware to dominate the home near the end of the article was funny.
