Yes, it is an odd development. But then what is now AMD's GPU division, ATI, used to be THE supplier of console gaming GPUs. Sure, there are issues with the ARM world. But i kinda prefer the vibrant market there over the 2 1/2 horse race that is x86.

As soon as this little guy comes out I'm totally buying one (a stick), I like what they're doing with this stuff!

I don't think it's evil corporate forces. They wanted a "budget" one with lower specs and realised they could reduce the price further by removing the Windows license. I doubt it's actually that much of the price tag.

Microsoft made licenses for their OS's free for anything under 9 inches.
Not sure it applies to this, since it doesn't have a screen. Windows is used in a lot of embedded applications, and I think we still charge for that (disclaimer: unknowledgeable Microsoft employee).

+1 for the ERLite; it's a MIPS62r2 Cavium Octeon with 512MB RAM[1]. Check out the Intel Atom Avoton and Rangley SOCs. Nice x86 cores, ECC, crypto acceleration, VT-x, passive TDP, and 4x 1/2.5gbe or 1x 10gbe depending on the serdes. I only wish they had VT-d to get sr iov.
