#3Google and Microsoft do this too when you enable real-time searching via the address bar, but both are pretty good at letting you know it happens. Doesn't Safari have some kind of first-run experience where the user gets some notice on this?

#4Simple workaround: don't use safari. Long term solution: don't by Apple products. Or at least don't run their software.

#8Lovely. I haven't got Yosemite, yet, but I wonder what happens when you disable api.smoot.apple.com (say via /etc/hosts)?
