Can anyone who uses duckduckgo tell me whether it does anything to hide your identity when you tell it to drop to google using !g ?

Nope, it's just a redirect to Google with your query filled in for the appropriate query string argument. If you want to use Google privately, use Start Page ( http://startpage.com ) or Ixquick ( http://ixquick.com ).

How do the Start Page and Ixquick search engines differ?

In case they can't handle scaling fast enough: www.startpage.com

I like the idea but I don't understand how you could switch to a site that ugly.

Fortunately, there is a userstyle, aptly named "startpage clean & minimal", for fixing the ugliness.

Is there any reason to switch if you don't really care about privacy? For me DDG is just a skin on top of the Bing search index with a silly name. Why would I use it?

Bing is only one index source. They have their own crawler, plus they pull from dozens of other sources.

DDG is headed in the right direction. But it still isn't quite ready for me to use it daily. I start typing a query in and have to wait a minute wondering why the suggestions aren't showing up. I am completely used to how Google works.

A critical feature I would like to see are real-time search results that Google added a few years ago. Autocomplete suggestions are also critical.

I really like duck duck go. I just wish they would register ddg.cm so I don't have to type out the whole url. I would register it myself and forward it if it wasn't for the fact that cm registrations cost nearly 100 dollars.

Why not just create a URL alias? Firefox and Chrome both have pretty good add-ons for creating aliases.

Firefox has built-in support for Keyword Search bookmarks. You don't need to install an add-on to create aliases.

If you bookmark any website's search results page, you can add a keyword and edit the bookmarked URL to include a printf-style %s placeholder. When you enter the keyword plus some string, Firefox opens the bookmarked URL, substituting your string for %s.

For example, I have a "w" keyword search for Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.php?search=%s and a "yt" keyword search for YouTube https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%s&search=Searc...
