Opensource/ free virtualization software?

I would like to know any free/opensource virtualization software that can enable me to run ubuntu on my windows box.

Microsoft VirtualPC is not opensource, but is free. However, it only supports 16-bit color, and has problems with Ubuntu out of the box (you'll have to search the web for non-standard installation instructions). I've used it successfully with Debian and PCBSD.

VirtualBox from Sun is opensource and free. I have not tried it but friends who have like it.

Virtual box, VMware player, virtual PC are basically your best choices. I recommend VMware, thats the one I like most and seems the best choice for *nix.

I use virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) to run linux on OS X. It is easy to set up and works well enough for my purposes (testing that webapps run on linux, and using a few libraries I can't build on OS X).

If you are using linux and have a vt enabled cpu available then go for kvm (http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Main_Page).

IMO, if you're looking for a free/open source VM solution for Windows hosts, VirtualBox is really the only option.

It is also possible to create new images with it, just search for "vmware image creation" ;)
