I STRONGLY recommend Asana: http://www.asana.com It's like using a smart piece of paper that just gets out of your way and let's you create, assign, toggle, set dates, etc really intuitively. That looks like a fantastic product. You mentioned creating a freelance workspace and then projects for each gig, but don't you invite/share at the workspace level? How do you configure per project permissions to the applicable client?
