It's a good idea, but it needs to be fleshed out more for internationalization. Even for the given case, English, what exactly constitutes a word?
Doesn't that already have to be determined by the browser anyway, for normal word wrapping?

I know I'm pretty late here, so hope you see this. I found this free online version of "designing for the web" to contain an accessible guide to typography and even delves into some of the more technical/nuanced areas
