> What if I told you the people Canada really want have no issues getting a US work visa/Green Card? This is ignorant. Stop pretending like the government is just barring illegals or "low-skill" workers (as you indicate in another thread) and welcome everyone else. I used to hold O-1. I have approved EB-1A I-140. Yet I ended up surprisingly being denied entry by the US CBP, unable to return to my home in the US, almo…

> Yet I ended up surprisingly being denied entry by the US CBP Did it have anything to do with failing a background check? Often, denials aren't as "surprising" as they seem.

While I feel irritated, I still in principle feel it's a good thing to continue the discussion and share different experiences and viewpoints to open people's eyes. So let me tell you more.

After my wife moved to Canada to wait for her US work permit / visa last year, I visited her every few times. I hold O-1 status in the US but didn't have an O-1 visa. I had been able to return to the US through a program called Automatic Revalidation [1].

At the same port-of-entry, using the same documents, CBP let me in three times. Every time they put me in secondary inspection, ask me for a lot of details about my travel. But they did let me in. The fourth time, the CBP changed their mind. They said a student visa I used to use was revoked a few years ago and wanted me to apply for an O-1 visa to prove my eligibility to enter, which I argued had nothing to do with my O-1 eligibility.

Why was my student visa revoked? I quote the email the consulate sent me years ago: "The revocation of your visa was due to additional information that became available after the visa was issued." That's it. I had sent follow-up emails and requested FOIA but never got any more details. That was a hard-earned visa. When I left the US to a Latin American country to apply for the new visa, I was detained and interrogated by CBP at the airport, presumably because of suspicions of Chinese espionage -- I was also investigated by FBI at some point. I lived in a country that was badly hit by COVID for two months to wait for the administrative processing of my visa. They stamped the visa, then revoked it, and that hit me again after years.

Surprising? Having the same travel documents at the same port, being eligible for entry for 3 times but denied the 4th time is definitely surprising. Not surprising? Yeah I have had a lot of troubles with the US government.

I never technically "fail a background check". Every of my previous visas and immigration petitions got approved after an unusually long obscured process. But how fair is it? Can I even expect an end to this?

And I'm definitely not the only one. I know a community of Chinese students / workers with more or less similar experiences. You can also search on Reddit for stories about long visa administrative processing that ruined people's careers and life.

only someone who is seriously disturbed would do this for days on end over something so silly as a programming language I have never called anyone names because they read my post history, I've in fact put links so people can go read everything I've written at their pleasure, which you called something like "boot licking comments that don't deserve to be linked" and for example "are you pretending to be stupid here?"…

who are you to tell me to do anything?

it is your opinion that that was a Nazi salute. I do not believe Elon is a Nazi who praises Hitler, otherwise why wouldn't everyone have cut ties with him?

there are millions and millions of people who also believe he is not a Nazi, are you going to go after every single one of them too?

> and being unwilling to explain why

why would I post any videos of myself on youtube? why would i do anything you ask me to? are you gonna do whatever I ask you to do?

you really have this idea that you're somehow entitled to make people do whatever you want because of your beliefs

which I think is funny because I thought that's exactly what you're against

> So thank you sir, you have given me exactly what I wanted and predicted and expected from you.

and like you quoted me, this very much applies: "convinced that no matter what, you're right". you quite literally are following me around because you feel like you have the right to make me believe what you believe.

> because you call people names for disagreeing with you when you're wrong

no, that was you who said that I was a boot licker and all kinds of stuff when I had said literally nothing against you. I then proceeded to simply counter your accusations and was very reasonable with you while you kept on accusing me of things and telling me that I needed to make a video of myself doing a "Nazi salute" because Mr God himself Don Hopkins told me to do so

it is of my belief that based on all the evidence, Elon is not a Nazi and does not hate the Jews, and that the salute that he did was an awkward salute because he is well known for his awkward and weird behavior both on stage and online.

thus, there is no reason for me to do whatever you're forcing me to do, because you're stuck in your beliefs and you're trying to force them onto me because you can't accept the fact that others think otherwise and have their own opinions and views.

and here you are, I believe 3+ days in and you're still following me around because you're seemingly obsessed with me (otherwise why would you be doing this?)

If you believe that the market sets prices via supply and demand in general, do you believe this is true for the labor market as well? If not, why?

Elon Musk was H1B after his study at UPenn, since then he created a lot of companies, jobs, and wealth for investors and himself. Do you think Elon Musk (and every other foreigner who founded US company) diluted supply of labor, or expanded supply of jobs ???

Even disregarding his incredible antisocial disorder which does real harm to our entire society, what does the most extreme individual have to do with statistics? That's the opposite of a good example.

Unlike offshoring, immigration increases supply and demand at the same time. Also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lump_of_labour_fallacy

This fallacy gets pointed to constantly, but it's not actually part of most arguments. I.e. it's a strawman. Bad immigration policy can and does negatively affect opportunities and salaries. Immigration in general does not necessarily do so, and an argument to that effect would be an example of the Lump of Labor fallacy, but that is not the argument being made.

We won't ever know. I know this sounds like a cop out, but Bernie isn't Ghandi just because he thinks socialism is cool. The immigrants who got shot were "fascist riot inciters" and it all just vanishes into the news media abyss. Same thing how the left media does full lifetime bios on deported immigrants while the right media only reports on the gangsters and rapists who get deported.

Oh we know. What I also know is: I can be friends with someone who disagrees with me about whether Bernie Sanders policies are good for America. I cannot be friends with a person who is an apologist for ICE wearing masks, driving unmarked cars, illegally detaining American citizens, and killing innocent people with zero accountability. Have a nice day.

You are inventing an opponent who is not in this thread. Please keep this noisy rhetorical tactic outside of HN.

Its not an extreme example, you can google or ask chatgpt for more example of foreigners who founded the biggest companies and created trillions of dollar of value.

For ex Microsoft was a failing company and losing market share under white american Steve Ballmer, reaching $230 bln market cap.

It took an Indian ceo to make microsoft a two trillion dollar company, there countless examples like these. I am not even talking about how fundamental research by foreigners gets converted into billions of dollars of gdp and market value (and jobs ofc).

The argument that foreigners “steal” jobs is fundamentally flawed and is coming from ignorance/bigotry

A huge amount of housing demand comes from immigration. You can't call people who like their neighbourhoods "NIMBYs" for not wanting their nice area to triple in population to solve a problem. They aren't the problem. The demand is the problem.

Actually you can blame them because it was the done thing throughout US history to build more homes when people moved to an area. And there is nothing more American than moving to a place with better opportunities or amenities. "The pursuit of happiness" and all that. Actual immigration from outside the US is a vanishingly small part of our housing problems, just as immigrants do not actually "eat the cats and dogs".…

> Actually you can blame them because it was the done thing throughout US history to build more homes when people moved to an area. And there is nothing more American than moving to a place with better opportunities or amenities. "The pursuit of happiness" and all that.

Of course you can - good point. It's just extremely misleading to. However, "throughout history" America is only about 400 years in total, and for a lot of that there was loads of free land available. And - more importantly - no benefits, so you came to the US to carve out a new life from the soil, not to join a successful nation and raise house prices.

Land in America is now settled, and that means that historical time is over, and no more applicable to debates today than it would be in any other nation, for most of whom the first 400 years would also have been a time of settling and opportunity.
