You don't need $300 of ram and a $200 CPU to perform eye tracking, otherwise the Steam Frame would be able to do nothing else

I understand that thinking is difficult now that everybody offloads their thought to LLMs, but the math is very simple. The cheapest comparable device with the same (or better) level of eye tracking is $1500 (i.e., 50% more than the Steam Frame)...and that was the price before the tariff war and Iran conflict jacked up prices. While the ram may currently be $300, the CPU is not $200 unless you're including the custom…

If Valve took the Steam Frame and removed: The SoC, memory, storage, battery and power system, wireless function and added a display cable, would it:

A. become ~$300 cheaper, close to the PlayStation VR2 which also has eye tracking

B. magically go up in price to $1500 like a Pimax headset?

If answering is difficult try asking an LLM for help. You're their target audience.

valve whole business model is invasive drm tho. far from claiming they are as low as meta, but that is their business model which never gets mentioned in this comparison, leaving readers to confuse gabe newel with RMS as some freedom authority

> valve whole business model is invasive drm As much as I like gog and their game distribution model and buy most games there, this is a huge exaggeration and actually false. A game studio/publisher does not have to use DRM in steam and many of them don't. Examples are Larian (baldur's gate 3), cd project red (witcher, cyberpunk), and quite a few small and big studios that don't. Basically afaik most games that are i…

And the built-in Steam DRM is laughably easy to bypass once you've bought the game, IIRC - just a small thing that responds with fake user id + license status.

None of the crazy VM wrapping etc.

I know everyone is singing the praises of the Steam Frame's wireless capabilities but honestly, I just want my wired VR experience back. I had a Rift 2, Reverb G2, then Quest 2 and eventually Quest 3. Despite the Quest 3 having a resolution similar to the G2, it looked more like the Rift 2 than the awe inspiring G2. Wireless gaming never looked as sharp and streaming over USB was also a very poor experience, with inp…

FYI, virtual desktop (and steam link) on quest 3 recently got beta updates for wired modes (they just tunnel ethernet afaik, but its better than nothing for your usecase probably) since the OS has seemingly recently unblocked this.

Quest 1, all firmwares, Quest 2 and 3 on some non latest hardware, can already be rooted, so that's not the bottleneck.

> non latest *firmware https://github.com/FreeXR/exploits is a good starting point for that. I think replacing the Android userland would be the tricky part here.

If you are interested in the topic I suggest joining the Discord, it's a pretty active place.

I have few rooted Quests, only some Quest2 still left unrooted.

It works, but there is usually a noticeable difference (at least with Quest).

I have a dedicated Wifi 6 (not 6e, so just miss/using the 5 GHz band) AP just for VR, directly connected to my PC and it works well Virtual Desktop & Quest 3. Have done quite a lot of quite active stuff (exploration, driving, flying, fighting games) and it really is seamless and I don't notice any lag as long as the game itself manages good FPS. If you really concentrate on the graphics, you can see some compression…

Good to know!

Yeah, I've been Linux-only on the desktop since the early aughts and trying to get the Valve Index working was so frustrating and inconsistent I eventually gave up. It sits collecting dust and I've still never played more than the first fifteen minutes of HL: Alyx (because no game is worth installing Windows for). Very much looking forward to maybe actually being able to use VR on my gaming computer.

Even the Frame doesn't support Linux properly. You cannot do streaming from a Linux machine, it must be a Windows machine. (yet). I'm sick of pretending Valve cares about Linux. Their own games have major issues with Linux. Every CS2 update breaks something, last time it was the inventory screens which were completely broken for like 2 weeks. Left 4 Dead 2 has major frame pacing and stutter issues on the Native Build…

I think it's a little dishonest to say they don't care. They made proton, they put out patches for their games on Linux fairly frequently.. in comparison to 80% of companies they go above and beyond.

I think this is just a symptom of Valve neglecting their (old and new) games as a whole.

> Left 4 Dead 2 has major frame pacing and stutter issues on the Native Build

Is this a common problem? I've never had it :P

I think the only way this is really compelling is if it's able to effectively function as a virtual Linux desktop with a reasonably clear floating monitor in front of you. I'm not sure that's appealing to me for a couple reasons that mostly boil down to "I don't really want a computer strapped to my face for hours at a time", but I'm the right kind of weirdo who sees the appeal in being able to eliminate the 32 inch…

> I'm the right kind of weirdo who sees the appeal in being able to eliminate the 32 inch monitor from my desk. I'd love to have all this desk space back to put "not computers" in. Or even just leave it empty. Unfortunately none of the current generation VR/AR/XR glasses come close to replacing a monitor full-time. They may be okay for using in a pinch (like if you're travelling and need a bigger/secondary/private di…

The Vision Pro comes closest, but it's expensive as all hell - and Apple only.

Visiting 3D virtual places sounds cool. What communities do this? Can I do this on my laptop too to trial it?

I am sure more communities do it, but I mostly know it from VRChat. For some examples I have visited: Scan of a park in Japan with a steam locomotive on static display: https://vrclist.com/world/1191265 Scan of a park in Japan with blooming Sakura trees: https://vrclist.com/world/1216699 In general, you can see other 3D Gaussian splatting worlds using this tag: https://vrclist.com/?type=search&sort=recent&tags=3DGS T…

Thanks, that's really handy to see.

Looks cool!

I'm wondering how long the battery is in one charge.

Valve confirmed a separate strap with hot-swappable batteries 'coming soon'

And a massive Anker USB-C battery pack isn't _that_ heavy if you want to spend multiple hours with the thing on.

Using it while flying will be complicated by the fact that all airlines have banned the use of power banks. If the onboard USB socket isn't very powerful then you'll only get an hours' use.

Source? Last I checked I'm allowed 100Wh of power bank on a flight. And for flights where that's not enough I'm used to having a (~100W) socket.

I've flown on half a dozen different airlines this year and all have had exactly the same stance: no power banks in checked luggage, and if they're in hand luggage you must be able to see them at all times (not in overhead storage).

You're also not allowed to use them even if you do have them with you. This is all very strictly enforced with reminders at the check-in desk and several announcements before take-off.
