Apple's search is so comically bad. For example, I can click on my applications, and I have an app called Chess. I can often type letters C-H-E-S-S and have it not show the Chess app. This is inside the applications folder! Many people have complained before. Honestly I ONLY search for app names in spotlight search or application window, it should be trivial to make it actually work. Maybe i just need to vibecode som…

I thought i was going to greener pastures when I switched from Windows to Ubuntu but Ubuntu native search is pretty bad too.

I typed "printer" so I can get to my printer settings and the first three are printer icons/emoji. I cant imagine why these would be more important

I liked the monolith. If I didn't want any AI on my device, I liked having the ability to switch that off and be done with it like Firefox offers (and what Apple offered in the last major release).

The good part is you have the source so you can just fork it, fix the code to prioritize results properly, compile and install it to fix Ubuntu, then see if you can get your patch upstreamed. /s

Yep; this has been the case since the very first iPhone, it can't be disabled, and there is no feedback it happens other than the typos. It is very crazy making and mind boggling.

Except on the first iPhone it actually seemed to work.

Still compatible with SE 2+ and 11+.

Hopefully that means a few more years of security updates for the last reasonably sized devices they made.

iOS itself has been getting strictly worse every release.

Maybe graphene or something will save us from the android/ios enshittification embrace.

Fair question. I expect the following from such a system : I set a time limit per app/set of apps,and the phone locks said apps once the limit is reached. So I don't have kids but in the keynote I remember them making a big deal about totally revamping it in 27. I know they definitely added a way to officially lock it (with a passcode) so your kids won't be able to theoretically just deactivate screen time. I think before you technically could do sorta the same thing (you can restrict almost any app to require FaceID or passcode to unlock).

There's also the assistive access or whatever which really locks the phone down but that seems more like for old people.

Alternatively if you wanted to get advanced you could maybe (not sure if it's free) create an Apple business account and try to manage the phone like corporations do. Or you may just be able to generate a configuration profile for free and add to the device. I would expect that process to be a lot more robust generally. You can control pretty much anything. Downside is if you don't have an MDM your stuck with whatever settings are baked into that config profile. Depending what you want to restrict you could pair it with something like NextDNS and lock it down to only safe sites.

Sounds like Android is way better though in this regard. Having to setup a child specific account at the beginning of setup sounds like a pain. If I ever have kids makes me really want to only give them a dumb phone or something like the new (unreleased as of yet) Commodore Callback - has some smartphone features but intentionally no social media

Yeah, it was "handoff". It was always taking a long second or two before it would open. Now it is instant /shrug

So after disabling this I realised since I only have an iPhone (and no Mac or other Apple devices) I should disable anything and everything in the settings that syncs stuff between devices. There was also one about the Focus options (like Do Not Disturb) and some other ones. I figure this can only simplify everything and speed up the phone if it never has to check for any (non existent) device to sync settings against. Still have all my local phone settings backing up to iCloud

I got a MacBook a few weeks ago, first Apple computer I have ever owned. I was so surprised when I plugged my 4K monitor into it, there didn't seem to be a way to run it at native resolution and all the text was aliased.

macOS has no problem running 4k displays for like forever. We're talking about ultrawide non-retina screens, and these had various problems.

They hide native resolution on a lot of displays.

Text is blurry on those as a result.

Thankfully, my desktops all run x11, so Apple’s fractional scaling brainrot hasn’t spread to my Linux or BSD’s yet.

As a parent of kids with iThings, the parental controls/screen time experience is incredibly bad. I have no idea why they are not interested in having it work.
