I can understand those pain points, but they don't really bother me. I'm on my 3rd oura ring now and I still like using it. I don't go crazy with the information, but I really do try to get a good night sleep and oura lets me know when I do not. I got married a few years ago and I usually don't like wearing my wedding band around because I worry about loosing it. So I wear the oura ring in place of the wedding band.…

>... oura lets me know when I do not. Does your body not do the same? I really want to like sleep tracking as a feature, but I find that my body already has built in sleep tracking, and the tech version doesn't give me any actionable advice on how to improve my sleep that my biological sleep tracker isn't already giving me.

How would you know if you never tested your intuition against the metrics?

Assuming I made this stuff. It is useless to have smart rings do the primary stuff of what a smart watch does, so not monitor your pulse or that crap because anyone who has a smart ring should have a smart watch for that and the few people who don't want smart watches but do want smart rings would be such a small outlier group I wouldn't care. The only way the concept of a smart ring makes sense to me is as a form of…

Is it? I don't really like wearing watches and certainly have no interest in a smart watch. It's also deductible from my HSA whereas personal security (??????) isn't and also costs significantly more?

What I don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention yet. If the internal batteries swell you are now in a very bad situation. https://cybernews.com/gadgets/samsung-galaxy-smart-ring-batt...

Was thinking about how many people willingly stuff lithium batteries in their ears, but have never read about an accident

All these trackers (rings, watches, wrist bands) seem so… useless. Do you really need to know your heartbeat every minute of the day? What does sleep tracking tell you, can’t you just tell if you’re tired? For athletes there are garmin type watches, which I understand during a workout. But the lifestyle trackers I don’t get the point.

It is understandable in some narrow sense because you want the outer surface to be nick-resistant, so you need to make it out of reasonably thick metal. Plastic rings would look terrible after a couple of weeks. But it's really hard to justify the big picture. It's hundreds of bucks + a monthly subscription for... what, exactly? Why does this need to exist? If you really want to gamify your pulse and sleep patterns f…

Perhaps you could reinforce both the outside and the inside, so any swelling would be directed parallel to the finger?

Or have a cut in the outer ring with an insert filling the gap. A partial ring is easiy to bend outwards, but difficult to bend inwards.

Odd, I was married for almost twenty years during which I think I took off my ring twice (maybe not even that much—if I recall correctly, I persuaded the surgical staff to tape my ring rather than have me remove it when I had surgery). Never had to resize it and it fit fine the whole time. I don’t know what lifestyle leads to a finger changing size dramatically during the lifespan of a smart ring.

> I don’t know what lifestyle leads to a finger changing size dramatically during the lifespan of a smart ring. Are you pretending that you are unaware that this can happen, or are you showing contempt for people who gain or lose weight? I don't find either useful.

To be fair to the parent commenter, I wondered the same thing, and I'm someone whose weight has fluctuated by >60% over the course of my marriage without needing my ring resized. Having been both obese and medically underweight over the course of that time, I'm not particularly contemptful of people who are either.

What appeals to you about a normal watch that a smart watch fails to satisfy?

And what specifically do you mean by normal?

I can't bring myself to send a corporation a constant stream of extremely personal data when I know they absolutely will sell/leak all of it along with the countless assumptions they'll make about me using that same data. It'd be nice to have the information a ring or watch gathers as long as it stayed local. I haven't seen many products offering that though. The thought of not being able to continuously profit from…

Colmi smart rings have a reverse-engineered Bluetooth protocol, so you can use Gadgetbridge instead of the official QRing app and keep everything local.

The only problem is that the data is woefully inaccurate, so what's even the point?
