Wish Valve would make enough of something so that everyone that wanted one could get one. I wanted to get an Index headset when they launched that. I would check the Steam store page every few months, for 5 years. Every time it said "Out of Stock". It's still out of stock in France today. They design great products, but are useless at getting them produced in quantity.

> It's still out of stock in France today. You might look at why it's out of stock. Here in the US, it looks like they're out of stock of the base stations, the right controller (but not the left!) and replacement face gaskets. All of the components are out of stock in France. i.e. there are 10 different Out of Stock buttons on the page.

> Your Steam Frame headset easily pairs with your Steam Controller. Stream from your PC, laptop, Steam Deck or (coming soon!) Steam Machine for an immersive experience with any of your favorite games. How are they even intending for the Steam Frame to be used with the Steam Deck? As far as I know, it’s not meant to be used with a cable, and the wireless adapter it ships with is USB-A.

Not sure what their plans are, but the Deck has a wifi 6E radio, so maybe they can use it to connect to the Frame directly. Given modern wifi chips can usually operate both as an AP and a client at the same time, this might just be a software feature they add to SteamOS. Worst case you can stream without a dedicated wireless link via your normal wifi with potentially reduced quality.

If this actually works, this is quite a nice, if a bit niche, combination. I really like the control layout of the Deck and it has more performance than the Frame. If you can put the screen on your head instead of having to look down on it, it might be a bit more comfortable. Sadly it seems the Deck has no IR LEDs so it can get picked up like the Controller by the Frame. Maybe a case/sleeve for the Deck can add those LEDs for full integration.

GamersNexus released a video comparing the Frame VR vs Meta Quest 3 today, worth a watch for the Frame review alone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcerOYY_K1g

Would be great if the Meta Quest could be jailbroken to run SteamOS

Quest 1, all firmwares, Quest 2 and 3 on some non latest hardware, can already be rooted, so that's not the bottleneck.

It's absolutely wild to me that they didn't include, and have devs ship profiles for some of their games, SuperDepth3D or some other depth map shader officially in some form in the Steam UI for this. If a big focus is playing your pancake library on a huge screen (due to there not being not many native VR games), having that huge screen be 3D would be a huge value add. And they're big enough to get some developers to…

This. This is what I am looking for. I remember using iz3d years ago, with their anaglyph renderer. Playing Half Life 2, Halo and others in stereoscopic 3D was a great experience. Dead Space was particularly nice, as the game uses no HUD. I guess most of it could run as a Vulkan layer?

You can already do a lot of it with ReShade shaders like the aforementioned SuperDepth3D, but it requires a game profile, tons of fiddling and non-incompatibility from the game. Having that shipped as dev-tested profiles with games would be the exact sort of thing that makes proton nice to use on the steam deck

Hacker News should be all over this device. They won't lock it down like the Meta stuff. Go ahead and install BeOS on it.

I think a hackable Linux PC in a VR headset is very exciting. But the major problem is the screen resolution is not good enough to make it a viable desktop replacement. It'll work great for gaming or media consumption, but reading smallish text will be difficult at best. If they made a more expensive version with a better display it would potentially be interesting as a portable workstation/laptop alternative. But I…

Out of curiosity do say this after trying with a recent e.g. Vision Pro or Quest 3 and finding that resolution itself (not inputs, UX, ergonomics, etc) is the limiting factor for work and if so what use case?

How long is that comfortable? For sure not couple of hours in 1 go

> How long is that comfortable? It depends on the person. I can wear my Index on my head for like all day. I'm not sure what my longest Elite: Dangerous session was, but it was quite long. Other people find the same headset to be either too heavy or improperly balanced for wearing more than an hour or so at a time. As far as motion sickness goes, it has been my experience that you can train yourself out of it. Recomm…

Do you need to keep taking Dramamine, or do you adapt to it eventually?

They are using foveated streaming where they track where your eye is looking and only stream that part at full resolution. They also have a dedicated wifi stick that directly connects to the frame in addition to using your normal wifi network.

I was more concerned with the latency than the bandwidth.

In the Tested review, they got 5ms latency with the dedicated wifi stick! I believe that was with 250mbit streaming. If they set it to max streaming bandwidth, it was 50ms or so.

DRM isn't really the story with Valve. Their business model is offer good service. Part of that is not being hostile to users. Users don't want to be spied on and have their data sold, so Valve doesn't do that. People want autonomy over their hardware, so they give them that. It's even in their marketing material for the steam machine. The frame is a computer running arch. If you want to 100% opt out of Steam and wri…

Their business model is cloud rent and lootboxes - I love their approach to service, hardware and Linux but let's not pretend they're noble.

loot boxes, sure but how is cloud rent amoral/ignoble?
