Gonna try it out on my m1 mbp because of this comment. Been waiting to play alyx forever but I didn't know a way to get mac to work - theres a solution now. Also VR headset has limited re-playability ... table tennis was my VR golf.

What headsets work on M1? The hoops I tried to jump through for a Quest 2 made me give up about a year ago.

Quest 3.

I don't really actually understand how Valve can answer "no" to the data collection questions. If they have an inside-out tracking system, then they implicitly obtain biometric and environment data (user height, room layout). If they have a microphone, then they implicitly obtain data about humans talking inside your house. If they have an App Store, then they implicitly obtain data about apps installed on your devic…

Your computer using data and their servers collecting it over the internet is different.

At least in the 3rd case they definitely collect it over the internet (the steam store is pretty inherently an online system)

Looking at the vendor page for that 5K colour camera, the page directly says they only support Windows and macOS. :( :( :( > The Arcturus Vision apps include Arcturus Vision Camera for recording and playing 5K HDR spatial video, Arcturus Vision Gaussian XR for exploring 3D Gaussian splats, and Sync for transferring recordings to Windows or Mac (with conversion for other players on Mac). https://arcturus.vision I've e…

It's an open Linux box, using standard interfaces. You can use ffmpeg and scp to transcode and transfer, or whatever else you're comfortable with. Even if Arcturus provided an app, most Linux users probably wouldn't use it.

Is that a guess, or do you know for sure? :)

Can you elaborate on what your setup is? I have tinkered plenty and there are multiple issues I'm still dealing with on my Arch machine, despite being on a setup that Valve claims is supported (KDE Wayland, Nvidia), namely: - SteamVR won't see my Index unless I power cycle it - The in-overlay desktop view does not work at all, either shows all black or doesn't render at all, so I can't control my desktop from VR whic…

Not the same person, but in case it helps, monitor dbus for denied flatpak permissions and use flatseal to grant them? (Could try allowing everything in flatseal just to rule it out) I don't use arch btw, but on fedora i have often found setroubleshoot useful for non-flatpak apps I'm sorry you're missing out on Alyx - it's not the greatest game ever made, but it's up there.

Fortunately I've already played through Alyx a few years back (and it really is an amazing experience). These are issues I'm having since moving my rig away from Windows a few months ago. Even then, games are still playable on this setup, but the points above add a lot of friction that I'd really like to get rid of.

I'm using Arch-packaged Steam, so it's not running in flatpak. I suspect both the headset not detected and desktop view being unavailable issues are Wayland-related, but the Steam Frame itself is running Arch+KDE, and KDE is dropping X11 very soon, so I'm confused that this setup is not functional even in the latest version of SteamVR - it should be what the Frame is running, modulo the CPU architecture.

Hacker News should be all over this device. They won't lock it down like the Meta stuff. Go ahead and install BeOS on it.

It's still VR. It's still niche. There are still many issues that VR hasn't solved (and may never solve). - You still have to wear a device on your head - You still (can) get motion sickness and/or headaches - There is still not a lot of great content around VR - Many people still prefer the flat screen medium and content The openness/closeness is only one of the many issues this solves, and it doesn't matter when al…

You forgot to add to the list: If you wear glasses you have to buy special lens inserts.

I did for my Valve Index, which I've used twice and are now sitting in a box. So, if I ever wanted to wear Facebook glasses, I couldn't because they don't sell them in my prescription; not that I ever will.

VR only works when your eyes are not skewed.

It has a 21.6 Wh battery. You can easily get a power bank 3+ times this capacity, thus can last 4x longer. If anything, I would rather have that weight in my pocket or backpack than on my head, all things considered.

Can't use power banks on many flights now

I believe the restriction is on charging devices out of sight (in luggage, seatback pockets etc).

I believe gamer’s nexus showed it working

Thanks. I skimmed the video as it was late at night, and didn't notice it. I'd better take a proper look at the video. :)

The Frame's screens aren't good enough for general computing. This is purely an entertainment device.

As far as I've kept track, a good-enough-for-reading headset doesn't exist yet. So it's not like Frame bad, it's whole industry still bad.

The Vision Pro is close, close enough for at least some people. Which is also why it's over 3x the price.
