These browser extensions still work: For Chrome: https://github.com/tsvb/post-peek For Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dumpster-fire... For Safari: https://andadinosaur.com/launch-litterbox

Don't you still have to log in to xitter with those?

No, but they are limited. Longer tweets are cut off, and you don't get to see replies.

ITT. Non-X users complaining that they can't use X. If you don't like the content on X enough to make an account, I don't see how this is a big loss. And yes I've on occasion had the same thought with TikTok - it'd be nice to see the vids that people send me, without making an account. But I'll just have to live my life without having seen that one super funny/interesting/enlightening video, or have to ask for a summ…

It's more that tons of local services (like firefighting updates) directly post their latest updates there

The content itself isn't the problem, it's the website.

Other people keep linking me to X posts they want to share.

The website is so bad that it (was) faster to manually change the URL even on my phone than to let the browser try to load the original.

Now I ask people to share screenshots of the posts instead of sending links.

Is the point really to be profitable? Or could perhaps its owners be willing to risk losing money for more power over the information landscape?

Yeah, that's a really good point that I hadn't really considered. Although, maybe the same argument stands? If X's lockdown leads to less users, then doesn't that translate to less control over the information landscape too?

Well, if one of the big social media platforms is now a far-right playground, that changes the political landscape.

Elon Musk is using twitter to create a global far-right platform that right-wing politicians can use to experiment with talking points before watering them down and bringing them to the public.

I don't see how any government or business (especially the former) can justify using X at this point when it doesn't serve the public interest or the interest of customers who deserve at least some choice. It's as unreasonable for them as using Instagram or a dating app for something intended for broad reach and accessibility. I don't particularly like Bluesky, but it's publicly readable and has RSS. Any real solutio…

> I don't see how

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it, just remember other people have their own and they are entitled to theirs, and no one opinion is 'right'.

The primary difference of course being that not a single worthwhile thing has ever been posted on TikTok, while X is a "public space" used by politicians, governments, public figures, news agencies, et al.

I'd like to see the fire department's tweet without having to sign up for X on the spot right now and do a 20 round captcha, followed by a prompt to install the app to verify my age, because suspicious activity was detected.

Of course - ideally - nobody would use this platform for anything important, but given that they do, I'd like open access to it.

> I don't see how any government or business (especially the former) can justify using X at this point If your logic is that some citizens won't be able to read what is posted there, then I assume you similarly object to other social media platforms, newspapers, cable TV stations, etc.

If my local government or some local business was limited to using one specific newspaper, this would indeed be a problem.

And in reverse, having a concentration of readers (users) on one platform, means that whoever controls that newspaper (platform) gets to be kingmaker for the government and the businesses.

Free speech as a constitutional requirement binding on a government to allow it is great; that government then using one specific private corporation that can use its own status as a non-government actor to have free speech rights rather than free speech responsibilities, means it is a de facto loss of free speech for everyone else.

It is 2026, it is not hard to publish a "blog" , if you want to share that same content over social networks that's fine but it should be a requirement that the data doesn't solely live in private walled "social" networks

How is posting on wordpress.com or tumblr.com any different from posting on x.com?

1. It's always publicly readable;

2. It is not reliant on any singular corporation, or trusting any singular corporation.

3. The established domain name system proves authenticity.

And of course the information can still be posted to X, etc.

This may be a situation where revealing a solution may end up harming it. For those who use iOS and other Apple OSes, I learned of this recently released free Safari extension called Litterbox that allows looking at one post on x.com. [1]: https://andadinosaur.com/launch-litterbox

With alternatives available: - bluesky - mastodon Why does anybody (that’s not some right wing, white Christian nationalist nut job) still use twitter?

> Why does anybody... still use twitter?

Because not everybody thinks the same as you?

People are entitled to their own opinions, just because you think something is wrong doesnt make it objectively wrong.

I don’t see why I can’t complain about unsupported conclusions derived from poor methodology. X doesn’t owe anyone API to run social research, but especially not activist groups with an active, expressed interest in denigrating the platform.

Again, Comcast is not an "activist group" and the study literally got awarded by the Royal Statistical Society. As a cherry on top, they do owe researchers in the EU (though this was done in the UK, I know Sky has an EU presence as well) API access or similar under Article 40 of the DSA.

You’re just being brazenly disingenuous at this point.

The publication is left-leaning, regardless of the distant parent company.

The experts they used to design and run the study were literally left-wing political advocacy groups, and a self-declared left-wing disinformation researcher.

The award is an empty appeal to authority.

But none of those facts matter as much as their obvious selection, base rate, and classification methodology failures.
