This is why I use Alfred instead of spotlight. https://www.alfredapp.com/

Alfred afaik uses the spotlight index too, so if that's the problem you're out of luck.

Marginally better? What kind of queries are you giving it? It's obviously not as capable as GPT, etc, but it's leaps and bounds better than the old Siri. There's no question about that.

I don’t recall exact queries. What I do remember is giving a demo of the developer beta to friends thinking it’s gotten much closer to ChatGPT and it embarrassing me. And being much slower, requiring a gesture at the top of the screen to dismiss etc just made me deactivate Apple Intelligence. It’s embarrassing in 2026 for Apple.

It’s so much worse than that. This happens to me on a daily basis with both MacOS and iOS. Say I’m searching for Chess, I’ll get to the C-H and it’ll show the Chess app, but enter that next -E and it’s totally gone. It feels like the system is designed like “Well, I showed them Chess when they entered CH, but they kept typing, so they must not actually want Chess.” This ends up breaking for me like 95% of the time, a…

I always assumed that was intentional to save you arriving through options. I find that behaviour quite useful as I can hit anything beginning with CHE just by typing more letters.

My phone kept saying it couldn't find anything, until I realised I turned off Spotlight Suggestions for photos, contacts, mail etc. Once I turned them on, Siri could access it.

Adding a stop at McDonalds on Google Maps won't necessarily work unless Google provides the hooks to accomplish that. But yes, it can give you information on a topic in a way the old Siri couldn't.

Isn’t the whole hope is that Google (and other app vendors) doesn’t even get a say at what’s possible through Siri.

All it takes is to expose application’s UI to the model, and let the model send actions. If a human can do it tapping on the screen, the machine should be able to do the same thing.

It blows my mind that a trillion-dollar company with the ability to attract the world’s top talent has struggled for years to make a chatbot.
