It's funny we're already at the "actually this isn't very impressive" stage when it was a little over a year ago when we were making fun of LLMs for not being able to add numbers. IC production takes a vast amount of resources and wealth, and it's a known quantity (after all, we've been doing it for decades), but it's still impressive what modern fabs can achieve.

Afaik LLMs still can't add numbers. They've just had their system prompts updated to make them use a tool call for any arithmetic.

That does not reflect with testing I just did locally. When the option of writing and running scripts was available, Qwen3.8-flash did indeed prefer to just do a physics related calculation via code. But, with a fresh chat and tool access turned off, it did the work on its own and produced correct results. Each step was rounded similar to how a person working by hand might do things, but matched my own hand calculations perfectly.

I don't think a single person reading or upvoting had ever heard of this extremely obscure cipher until this post hit the front page, it's not "cope" to use basic critical thinking to ask questions like "was this cipher well known" and "were there many attempts to solve it before now"... that's pretty much Information Literacy 101.

I think the point is that rather than YOU finding out the answers to those questions, and post only if the answers were indicative of some "gotcha", someone ALWAYS posts something similar to your OP as a lazy/low-effort way to discredit LLMs.

Prior to the "Elicitation" section, you'd think this article was written by a cryptographer or baroque historian who had been trying to solve this particular puzzle for years - failing embarrassingly until they presented the problem to Claude. However, as far as I can tell (I too am not a baroque historian), there isn't much reason to think this cipher was well-known or studied. But as they do eventually explain, the…

"THE Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher" Yes, this language always insinuates it's a well-known thing even though no one ever heard of it, other than two people on the far side of Europe.

I just actually solved THE arm32/singularity2001 Hunger Mystery—with the help of GPT-Sol—turns out, I hadn't had my breakfast. A few diagnostics, then BOOM! The _smoking gun_. A fridge sensor, the door unopened, as seen on Home Assistant! OH MY GOD.

"if llms are so intelligent why is cancer still not cured?"

I'm waiting for the inevitable: "Well, LLMs only cured a few types of cancer"

Then: "LLMs only cured cancer as a marketing stunt."

> Various people attempted to decipher it, but it seems they were missing one crucial hint. They tried methods like frequency analysis, substitution, and homophonic substitution, and none of these approaches worked. That’s because they missed one easy clue. It appears that is not true. Someone here [1] has found a [German] blog [2] writing about this cipher. There are two comments (Jan and Helmut) from 2014 under the…

Does that really matter?

We and a LLM are doing the same thing: trying things out while skipping unrealistic/wrong things.

If an LLM can do the same thing as we do but a lot faster, t already won and this is just another example.

Language evolves with use. As more of the users are bo tlike you the langugae might feel like it's evolving from under you. It just sounds bad, like GenZ English in the ears of someone over 40.

GenZ English is at least understandable, it's wild, we're so cooked.

Wow. That's bleak. For me the the initial joy of building software with AI caused possibly two happiest months of my life. And cancer caused many darkest ones. Snap out of it.

> , but everyone feels like their life/existence lost meaning Did you miss this part? Because to me... that's fucking bleak. You snap out of it.

It's called growing up. And ultimately it's liberaing.

Many people don't achieve that level of understanding before their death.
