I also experience this as a great loss, but honestly yes, I can't get excited about perfecting the craft of writing computer code now that there are AI systems that have done so. I'll always be sad about this! But the flip side is that I'm way more excited about what I can do with software, now that it's so much easier to write.

I experience quite the opposite. I'm quite excited about the value my skills are gaining in relative terms. An entire generation of potential competition is getting addicted to the subsidized corporate tooling. Voluntarily!

For comments only, not posts. Downvoting comments will achieve nothing when it comes to reducing the prevalence of AI spam posts.

Once we start dividing, filtering, or moderating content, HN will just become Reddit. The current level of moderation is good enough, if not the best. It works because the community naturally filters itself—like-minded people find a home here, while those outside the bubble quickly get bored and move on.

Well it is the best way to do a 'fuzzy' filter like that. Rather than trying frantically to chase keywords. I don't think anyone considers AI to be something useless. It sure has its uses, I use it a lot to help with research. But it is sometimes shoehorned into things it doesn't belong, or its capabilities overblown for marketing. I think that's what people object to.

It's more complicated than that. This place has changed. The biggest tell is reposting something interesting from a year or two ago that received hundreds of upvotes. Now it will get 2 or three upvotes whilst "lulz Trump" /r/politics style culture war BS will be immediately hurled up and onto the front page.

Those posts get buried really quickly by the anti flamewar algorithms. I really don’t think anything changed regarding political stuff over the past 2y on this site (other than the fact the US has a new administration doing pretty insane things, resulting in way more important political topics, such as everything related to Iran)

I am not, HN was this product, it just changed. Hence the invitation to discussion on the subject.

But HN simply ranks posts by upvotes. I know you don't intend it this way, but you're effectively suggesting that HN should not pay attention to what its userbase are upvoting, but instead curate posts by your personal opinion instead. Exactly. HN hasn't really changed, the industry has.

The community does a pretty good job of following the guidelines and that's helped to suppress the echo chamber effect that any personalization would add to.

AI is novel and exciting and terrifying (my how we live in interesting times!) and all of that will fade with time.

But, like you said, if somebody really wants to change their view of HN, the tools are out there.

I'm curious where people would go to as an alternative. I like looking at lobste.rs for non-AI stuff, but to post there you need to be invited by an existing member so it's not a perfect alternative.

tildes.net is also great, though it's not just for tech stuff

Thanks for the recommendation, I had actually never heard of this but it looks promising
