Sure the damn things aren't perfect yet, but people act as if they are incapable of doing anything, or no more worth the hype than Bootstrap?? (the latter comes from this very thread!)

When Anthropic gave out some usage, I was able to do a lot more and it felt differently than when you always have to think about limits.

I now spend $90 this month and do even more now (privat). It might really be a big bias of these people either not spending any time on it or just doing very small experiments and immediadly being put of by some random issue.

does hn quickly down rank other subjects?

if i’m not mistaken they might with political subjects, if so, there’s already precedent and so the tech pieces are in place.

i would be against entirely removing it, but limiting it to like 10-20% of the front page would honestly be kind of nice.

it feels like it’s been an ai sausage fest for months and months.

I like HN precisely because it tends to tell me what's happening.

GitHub or AWS down? New LLM model? Some Apple event? Some famous tech person passed away? Some language achieved 1.0?

I think removing what's currently hot opens a bad precedent.

I suggest using personal filters (or even AI) to curate what you see in HN and the internet itself.

"Whats new" is, I hate to break it to you, 99% AI-related. Its a pretty unique point in time here and likely will continue to be for at least 12-24 months. This is likely to go down as being as reality-altering as the internet but with the added wrinkle of things are able to progress/iterate _much_ faster. Not only are the models progressing at breakneck speed, but our understanding of how to use them effectively is as well. So theres legitimate "discoveries" happening every week.

Well it is the best way to do a 'fuzzy' filter like that. Rather than trying frantically to chase keywords. I don't think anyone considers AI to be something useless. It sure has its uses, I use it a lot to help with research. But it is sometimes shoehorned into things it doesn't belong, or its capabilities overblown for marketing. I think that's what people object to.

This is where I’m at. I find AI to be useful but there’s a tendency for it to suck the oxygen out of the room. Other things still matter.

Edit: I'll also note that while its nice to see real novel AI news I find a lot of it is extremely marginal value. I mentally associate most discussion with debating what color of marker to use when marking the edge of your CDs to improve the sound.

This was true before the Internet was overrun with bots. "Folks" doesn't mean what it did mean years ago.

Life is always changing. HN has gotten more popular over the years and at least it feels materially different in comment quality. Bots are always a problem but that’s not why you see different things on the front page, that might be your nostalgia taking over.

HN is curated by moderators and votes are just one input. All sorts of topics get downweighted all the time. Given the longevity of the AI news cycle it's not a crazy ask to suggest it get downweighted too.

And it's "censor", not "censure". To censure AI news would be for Dan and Tom to lodge a formal complaint about it.
