big milestone. the iPhone design engineering group might be one of the most hardcore and intense engineering orgs in modern technology.

software people have no idea how incredibly cushy they (still) have it.

Another analogy can be found in the current way that automobiles are sold. For new models that are considered desirable, they maximize their margins by putting expensive limited editions with desirable badging and options on sale first. It may take a full year or more before a mainstream mass-market edition with basic features is released at a lower price.

The iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pros were released this week. The "ordinary" iPhone 18 apparently won't ship until Spring of 2027. That's the same strategy!

Most commonly, media. Having a larger screen means you don't need a separate iPad.

More niche use case is typing. Im on zfold 7 because I use Termux quite a bit.

Woah... thank you for sharing RE the Pencil, because that was the only killer feature that I could think of that would get me to buy the Duo. Taking notes during an in-person meeting with the pencil feels (and looks) much more "they care about what I'm saying" VS "they're texting/emailing someone" (when typing on a phone or computer).

And even with mobile dictation/notetakers, there's something that screams respect when someone writes actual notes down by hand.

Apparently Foldables are incredibly popular in China. They sold more foldable in China than the rest of the world combined.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple release an iPhone Duo Max later.
