I get excited about this but that's because I want this... not because I need it. What I actually need might be less of an iPhone and more of a nano than a duo. Something small and portable that doesn't make me spend every spare second on the phone.

A dumb phone (or a glorified apple watch) that unfolds into an iphone, I would pay for this.

I'd like to have one of these devices once the prices get a bit more normal. I remember paying 400€ for an iPhone 4 when it came out, a flagship phone at the time by all metrics. Adjusted for inflation, that's about 600€.

Flagship prices have now reached the 1000€ mark, with marginal upgrades, and in many cases actual downgrades.

There is no world in which I can justify paying 2x-4x the flagship price for a device fulfilling a fundamentally similar purpose.

For a different comparison, a 14" MacBook Pro costs that much.

The ability to switch software controls hasn't been communicated but the device will definitely be best suited for right hand handling (just opening it from left hand requires wrist twisting).

I don't think I would want this device for $500, let alone what Apple is asking. What is the appeal? There are a few screen scenarios that make sense for my life: (1) Multiple displays at desk to work; (2) TV + couch; (3) laptop + lap or surface; (4) phone (anywhere). I'm never in need of a tablet. If I needed that screen real estate, I'd be reaching for my laptop.

For my wife, who (a doctor) I'm confident is a representative of 95% of smartphone user-base, uses her iPhone for all[0] the tasks you described.

[0] At work she uses hospital provided Windows PC. Used only for patient records, nothing else.

I think the Duo looks great. And from the few hands on video I have seen I think the Apple presentation actually doesn't do it justice. There is no crease at all! [1] On the note on this year's keynote. I can't be the only one who feels the whole vibe of the keynote changed. This isn't Tim Cook style keynote and John Ternus wasted no time to try and changed a few things already. I can't wait for John to further shake…

but it's weird how the phone is square when it's folded, i don't see any ergonomics in using a square phone...
