sorry, maybe my english is failing me here. what i was getting at is that using ai feels like gambling to me, where tokens, time, etc. are wagered against the chance for desired output. the risk is that you waste your tokens/time, and the prize is a useful answer (if not the exact code/solution/whatever one was hoping for) i wasn’t trying to convince you, i’m just explaining that this is gambling in a meaningful sens…

I agree with the other commenter. Your English is perfectly good. Your subjective experience is your own and I can’t disagree with that.

I’m working from a place where my employer pays for my tokens so I’m also not spending anything except my time. Maybe if I were, it would feel more like gambling.

From my history with llms, this exaggerated example does hit home a bit too close for comfort.

Which, again, if you attempt to use these LLMs in an actual enterprise project with the assorted legacy mess in it, that does have to have backwards compatiblity, and interacts with 'weird' tech (well, weird to full stack Node/React devs), well it's an exercise in frustration.

Which makes sense.

In a conversation about code, the most likely answer is often some comment about backwards compatibility.

In a conversation about a legacy enterprise app, the most likely answer is often going completely insane

Except you are missing an important aspect: the model includes training data that responds to THIS IS FUCKING WRONG, after which highly likely follows correction patterns and working solutions. Ie, actually, yes, shouting at the AI can (and does, there are papers on this), work.

Anyone remember the gpt-3 era where adding "this is important to my job" and "if this is wrong someone dies" to prompts made a measurable improvement in accuracy and reduced hallucinations?

Yeah that's when the site lost me too. I feel like people just tell AI "make the thing" and then get mad when it doesn't match up to their vision that they didn't specify at all.

This is a succinct summary of most the the profession of software engineering. Just replace AI with "programmers".

No. People have an inner monologue, partial results and ideas and they remember that. If they've worked some minutes/hours/weeks on something and you ask them why did they do that, they will either answer honestly and truthfully, lie, or say "I missed that/didn't seem important so I just chose something at random". Actually split brain experiments tells a different story. The left hemisphere actively confabulates, inventing plausible explanations for actions it didn’t initiate, suggesting that much of human self-narrative may be post-hoc storytelling.

Perhaps, but it's also a rather questionable achievement: We've already had several decades of program-output that can match humans with literal brain damage.

If anything, biological comparisons should make us cautious. Consider the vast gulf that still exists between the finest artificial organ/limb versus the OEM parts of natural nanobots.
