If you had done this on a Mac, it would have worked just fine. The failure in your chain is iOS Calendar not being an intent handler for ICS files. Another way you could have solved it would be to have the Google Workspace connection set up in the backend for Claude and it would write the parsed events to your account directly. Then in iOS you could move the events to the iCloud Family Calendar. Or again, if you did…

Yes, I know all of this. I have a Mac, and a PC, and an Arch Linux desktop, and an iPhone. None of the solutions are "easy." The task was "take a picture of a printed calendar with my phone and get it in my Apple Calendar (with zero intermediate steps)." This is not possible.

It's not even that. The average HN user would gladly use it even if it was privacy-invading. Just like they use Gmail every day and have no qualms to upload gazillion private docs to OpenAI and Anthropic.

It's just that Facebook isn't cool anymore.

At what point did Claude fail with that, generating a list of events from the scan, or adding the events to the calendar? I had a different AI (Grok) successfully take a prompt like "I live at this address and need to pick up my son from school at 2:30pm, and then we need to hit these three stores before heading back home. Find the path with the least driving and add all of these as discrete events to my calendar wit…

The failure is that the task was "can I take a picture of a printed calendar with Claude and have events added to my shared family calendar" and it is apparently not possible. The parsed file was fine, and maybe would have needed a few touchups, but Claude could not access the calendar directly, and Apple Calendar cannot read its own calendar format. So, failure, no partial credit given. My wife manually added the calendar in the time required it was taking me to debug this nonsense; I probably said "wait, no, it's almost done!" a half dozen times before throwing up my hands.

The added benefit of this failure is that by adding it by hand, we were much more familiar with the events on the calendar, and were ready for a few "outlier" events, e.g. a tournament 100 miles away that we knew about a month ahead instead of a few days.

Meta certainly do give the impression that they are burning through ridiculous amounts of cash with not much to show for it, and thats just from the outside.

Someone had a poster up of Pam "this is the same thing" on the one side had the apollo space missions, and the other a picture of Zuck avatar next to the Eiffel tower. At the top it had the current RL spend (something like 45billion) they like me working in RL.

there were three teams for everything, sometimes in the same org.

Take hand interactions for example.

There was production hand detection, they were in the OS/product team. They spent a lot of time trying to make sure it was reliable and useable.

Then there was a near research team, who took old state of the art and salmi sliced it until it worked well enough on either current or next gen hardware.

Then there was the production research people, who were derived from control labs, who for some reason were not in RL-research but buried deep in "production"

Then in RL-Research, the biggest org was agios, who also did hand interaction, but hardly any of their work actually made it near to prod. They liked wrist mounted cameras with no privacy systems, because why would you need it on your wrist? its not like those head mounted twats who spent two years trying to master privacy.

You also have to demonstrate "impact" every 6 months. which is really great when your delivery pipeline is 1-7 years.

I had to laugh to the point of tears the other day when I saw my friend scrolling through Instagram and they encountered an "Ad Break". The app simply doesn't let you scroll through another post, story or reel until you sit there like a good boy and let the ad sit for 10 seconds or whatever. How people put up with that kinda crap and continue to use these apps daily for hours on end is mind blowing to me.

I wonder if the prevalence of adblock has helped make a lot of things like this possible. Like, it's hard to imagine people putting up with this without literally protesting in the streets. But the people who can't tolerate it have mostly gone through the effort of opting out, and those who can just put up with it. And thus, the frog boils.

I refuse to pay any money to these companies specifically AND so far I use it solely for things where copy-pasting is entirely fine. I used free trial of Claude Code and has not seemed to be superior for my usecases.

Just use opencode/pi/etc with an open weight model?

Does it bother you so much to see people out there who can go on without their lives being shaped by the Corporations?

Publicly stating to not have access to message contents yet doing otherwise, i.e. outright deception, doesn't seem like something you can EULA your way out of in most jurisdictions. Beyond that, the GDPR and similar laws also impose limits as to what you can EULA away even without being deceptive about it.

At best, it would come down to the details of what their marketing materials have claimed wrt to keeping contents secret. Do you have anything concrete they've promised? I don't remember anything, but maybe that's just my bad memory.

Anything specific from the GDPR you'd apply here?

Is that true? I find that unlikely. I would believe if normies don't know Alphabet or Bytedance even when they use their products every day. But Meta? You open every app they make it literally says "from Meta" in the splash screen

tbh I also use google AI tools frequently. It’s convenient (search bar is top of my window), and extremely fast at generation. For quick Qs, opening a chat bot and changing the default reasoning from my coding settings, switching from Work to Chat, etc etc, is too much of a faff.

I ended up adding -ai to every search in the browser level to turn this crap off. I couldn't find a way to disable it otherwise. I did it after it hallucinated the world cup games schedule which made my friend send wrong events to everyone after he "looked it up". Can't stop this from him, but at least this honest mistake won't happen to me.

Surely there's an extension for whatever browser you are using?

My problem isn't privacy or Meta spying on me. The product isn't useful.

My partner's algorithm gets more updates from my family than I do. Dunno why. "How did X do on the marathon?" they ask. And I go "X ran the what now when, huh?".

Same with all groups. Forums died, people moved to FB groups and now conversations are in an eternal September and impossible to follow.
