I think it's less pessimistic and more aware of its limits now and thus not as impressed

When we were all younger it seemed the sky was the limit

But we've gotten wiser and realize the ceiling with tech like iPhones and PS5

Hedonic treadmill just goes in a loop of experience. Consumer tech is just attention seeking codependency on the part of corporate

The real cool stuff going on with tech is in domains like regenerative and longevity medicine; see Michael Levin at Tufts for truly sci fi Wolverine healing type mind blowing ideas

Kind of not like this.

I mean the coat on my brick wall (and ideally roof), that will reflect most of the infrared and UV.

I've used a white paint like this on the conservatory and white walls outside, and along with a solar-reflective foil outside of my windows it's the biggest factor to having a nice temperature inside. I might also actually consider painting the interior walls with something like this as well - there's less he t escaping through radiation if it's reflected back, right?

I noticed you edited your original post to point out these “silly” objections. The point of saying “private individuals” is that they have the right to determine for themselves what is a good use of their money and your opinion about whether it’s wasteful is irrelevant. I was assuming you had some ideas about how to reduce the waste but apparently not, you just wanted to tell everyone about your personal preferences for how other people spend their money.

I don't think the 75k number is what's shocking. It's a house that costs 7 figures. That is not remotely attainable for most people in this country.

That's how you meet people? You invite your friends, maybe one or two of them know someone who'd be interested, they join a few times, and now they're your friends, too. There was the one picture of his three middle school friends building the computers - I imagine four people can become 18 over 20 years pretty easily.

It’s how our fantasy football league became a spin off bowling leader and some fellas started playing smash bros all anchored by one friendly dispensary owner in town.

I’m lucky I got in with them but when I moved to this small coastal town from a huge city (Houston) i promised myself I’d say ‘yes’ to almost any social occasion and it has been life changing.

I went from many friends to no friends when I immigrated to USA then back to many friends (although heavily work linked) in Houston over 20 years to zero friends here again.

I guess you get better at it like anything else or you give up and atrophy socially totally.

It's eternal September but for HN. The relatively small group of HNers that used to inhabit this place has been slowly pushed out by people who are looking for cheap dunks. It's still better than other place but your question is naive: this couple not have done anything to avoid criticism. They are the outgroup, and exist only to be attacked. There's no intellectual argument being made here, just in-group signalling.

It's time for HN to build in blocking capability. It's a small percentage of people and it's often the same people repeatedly showing up making the same points but that's enough to discourage reading and participation.
