If someone wants to post a lan party yacht, I’m here for that too

Hmmmmm..... Just kidding. Gotta say I never understood the appeal of yachts. What does a yacht give you that a fancy house doesn't? It's on the water? So what? It's not like it goes fast enough to be a worthwhile form of transportation... I do totally get private jets. They are fancy, but also get you somewhere. LAN party jet? That'd be a cool way to pass a long flight. Hey guys let's LAN party to Tokyo! (I do not ex…

I've lived aboard boats for about 17 years of my life, I feel more comfortable squished into a boat then living on land, the sounds and movement are somehow reassuring. When my family moved ashore I got my first PC and I would host LAN parties, I also enjoy cooking so I would prepare a bunch of casaroles, everyone would pitch in and then skip sleep for most of a long weekend. Sometimes I see some old big boat with large generators for sale and contemplate packing a lan party on board, being out in some quiet ancorage with your friends fragging away sounds like a dream to me! I've seen your house on here a couple of times I love your setup!

If you read it in context, I am making a comparison between computers and cabinetry, and noting how absurd it is that the technological marvel that is a computer costs a similar amount of money to the cabinet holding it, which is just some wood and hinges. One would almost expect the computer to cost millions of dollars, but instead it costs thousands. Maybe "cheap" was a poor choice of word for this. Sorry.

"Sorry"

Sorry.

Oh hello! This is my house! Thanks for posting! Previous discussion here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42156977 Unfortunately this new thread was posted while I was asleep, and so I haven't been online to answer questions as the thread developed. Whereas in the previous thread I participated from the start. Pro tip to anyone whose stuff gets posted on HN: It is a completely different place when the author is…

Looks pretty cool. I wonder why you kept all of the individual power adapters, instead of opting for neater rails with beefier and more efficient power supplies.

No good reason, I'm just not familiar with power rails, nor was my contractor.

My dad was able to pay for me to attend the University of Minnesota. More importantly though was that my parents fed my childhood fascination with computers, making sure I had the opportunity to learn to code early (a volunteer at my school taught me BASIC at age 8; my parents bought me a PC so I could continue experimenting) and then they gave me a lot of free time to spend building things and learning. After I grad…

You are likely engaging as a good sport (and the anecdata are fun) but you don't really need to explain yourself, if that's what you are trying to do. Life is all shades of precarious, unfair, galtonboard-ish, windfall-ish. Pareto-powerlaw-nonergodic-pissed off pikachu-ish. Have fun. Somebody's got to.

Yeah I just think it's fun to tell the story.

yatch can get into international waters so anything goes? So in my mind if someone owns a yatch they are into weird an illegal stuff 99% of the time.

Like porn with midgets and donkeys? You can have a lot of midgets on a yacht, but where would you keep the donkey?

That's what distinguishes super yachts from mere regular-sized yachts. The wide base of the hull increases stability on the water to the point that donkey husbandry becomes practical.

> and is being wasted Why is this use of their money a waste?

How many people will get to use this for LANs? A couple dozen once every couple of months? A proper Internet cafe could serve thousands per week.

What is the mechanism by which you imagine that this private individuals $75K becomes a public internet cafe?

If you read this and the feeling you came away with was "this rich guy is boasting", that's a reflection of your own envy. A mentally healthy, content person is capable of reading about cool things like this and not immediately feeling the need to broadcast their resentment and jealousy.

You mean 1.075M? The house was the bulk of it. But that’s the point. A private individual will use his economic power on vanity spending and it won’t materialize into anything efficient or useful.
