What happened to Brian Sicknick?

Officer Sicknick did not die from being hit by a fire extinguisher because that never happened https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/brian-sicknick-fire-exting...>. He died of a stroke which the autopsy found no connection with the riot https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2021/apr/19/brian-sickn...>.

The one person who died violently was one of the rioters, an unarmed woman who was shot by Capitol Police. Four other rioters died of natural causes around the time of the riot.

Resistance and revolution happened before the internet. People have become lazy and complacent, and want their resistance served up over the wire. Thats not how real resistance happens, but it does make people feel like they are doing something, sucking up their energy while the biggest impact is TikTok memes, the modern version of the sternly worded letter. This is exactly where the power structures want the struggl…

A caveat: people would have to be talking to each other to talk about resistance to each other. They don't. Underground resistance forms out of existing "underground" social networks - social clubs, friends, people who know each other through any means. There's no longer any underground socialising at scale. We use the internet for it, where talk of resistance is strictly banned. Even when you talk offline it's monit…

Exactly. Why is it people don’t talk to each other? Why do they choose to have all of their discussions on the world’s largest and most powerful surveillance instrument?

It’s actually not that hard to go to places where phones, cameras, and internet access is banned or heavily discouraged, and guess what? It’s just people talking to each other, like we did up until the mid 90s. Just providing a technology free context is enough to get people to talk to each other.

I am a huge technology freak, but I can’t reasonably deny what I see, and that is that communications technology, in its present form, has been a terrible disaster for human communication because it made it effortless.

As it turns out, making it effortless also made people not value it at an interpersonal level, and to lessen the value of all of the cultural machinery that hinges on communication ( and the effort of it) as a central pivot.

Every step that makes communication more instantaneous and effortless undermines the value of character, honesty, and accountability.

Follow this and you can see how this has brought us to where we are today, step by step, starting with the telegraph.

What did they do??

Sounds like providing encrypted communications? I think we can all see the potential problems with this, even if a specific group is awful. “The specific claim: a far-left media group that describes itself as a “tool” for militants to share information “to be acted upon” used A/I’s services to publish communiqués and calls to action for U.S.-designated terrorist groups, including FAI/FRI, the IRGC, Hamas, Hizballah,…

That's what the USA alleges. There is no evidence of any of this is true, and the USA is known to be a habitual liar and a terrorist state itself.

"They promoted and hosted violent/terrorist activity." What kind exactly?

https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/20... Check the near the bottom. Some are named, such as Armed Proletarian Justice, Revolutionary Class Self-Defense, and Jane’s Revenge, but some unnamed ones as well (at least their actions have been described).

I heard MS13, and Tren de Aragua.

"created: 62 days ago" -- beyond that, what else makes you think it's a bot?

I'm a gentleman and beyond that it's merely more likely (we are on HN and it's a newish user) that it is a bot, compared to their being a "meta shill" or a "monomaniac". You can skim their comments history for more information.

I agree, it's a botlike comment history.

Nudge theory. It's only got to be 1% more convenient than the alternative (and it's more than that), and you don't notice what you are giving up until it's too late.

> We are stopping, but the Resistance and ideas do not stop. Stay human. How will that be if the resistance is not visible to the public. What are all the people using their services supposed to do? I’m guessing there are plans to reform in a few years. Why is the Italian government not protecting them?

>Why is the Italian government not protecting them? The Italian police wiretapped them for one year without them knowing.

Did they prosecute? Or did they investigate and find nothing wrong ?

You go offline. Paper flyers and meetings are much more effective anyway. It is also not like Palestinian activism is blocked on X, despite people here saying that only Nazis are on X and everything is censored: https://x.com/intifada

Controlled opposition is sometimes allowed on X.

I am not sure I see a fundamental distinction between HN censoring your speech on their platform or the government preventing you from speaking in public. Both are censoring you right? Is the difference the fact that HN is free to regulate its own platform as it wants to? For a large part I see people using digital platforms as a primary method of expressing their thoughts and opinions. Governments in both the US and…

If I have a public platform and refuse to sponsor/publish/platform your speech, that is my free speech right! You don't have the right to force me to speak your words. Only the government is prohibited (by 1st amendment) from censoring/limiting speech (that does not cause or promote violence or injury to others). There are also some restrictions and protections also offered to the press (eg libel and defamation) and…

> Hmm, I would have expected more outrage from the US "free speech absolutists" over this US government decision The crowd that claims to be in favor of free speech should be in favor of free speech for everyone, not just US citizens. This thread isn't about the government - it's about how HN's very vocal "free speech" crowd are actually libertarians who want to say awful things and not get called out rather than peo…

Why is my position invalid? I'm in favor of the exact type of free speech provided by the Bill of Rights for citizens of the USA, of which I am one, and that I do not care about the fantastical universal "for everyone" form of free speech that is being pushed on HN? Let your own countries defend their own "free speech" rights. The UN cannot defend it for you, and you cannot defend it for yourself.

So you only care about things that benefit you?
